Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Intermediate Level
Kids these days are often time spending so much time inside or on technology that they don't ever learn how to socialize in a social setting. Often times this leads to a lack of confidence for either trying new things or when presenting ideas to others, even their own age.

In this class I be teaching students tips and strategies that will help them to have the confidence to reach their goals and to do well in uncomfortable settings. Some of the scenarios we will cover include: Trying something new, giving a classroom presentation, sharing a new idea and taking the lead in a project/situation.

At the end of the class, I will have each student share what their biggest fear is with the rest of the class as a way of showing them that they can share something uncomfortable with the rest of class and have the confidence to do it.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Middle School English teacher and one of the first lessons I teach each year is this one. I've seen it transform and change students completely as I see them learn and change their perspective. I see them gain confidence in themselves as they realize that they can get out of their comfort zone and be leaders.

Before teaching I was a news anchor for television and would often have to portray and show a confidence about stories that I didn't know much about.

Also, I lived in Mexico for two years as a missionary and after only five months I was made a zone supervisor where I had to lead a group of 36 other missionaries in the state of Oaxaca. Many of these missionaries were from Mexico or spoke fluently in Spanish. I had only been learning Spanish for six months and was then asked to lead. Using many of the strategies that I learned in class, I gained the confidence to be an effective leader, despite what I felt was a huge barrier.
