Class Experience

The focus of the class is to form study and reasoning skills that provide a long-term benefit for students who are interested in mathematics. The specific competitions we work towards are: Elementary Math Leagues, Math Kangaroo, MOEMS-E and MOEMS-M, MATHCOUNTS,

The class is based on the syllabus used by the 'Competitive Mathematics for Gifted Students' series and it taught by one of the authors.

Students should allocate 4 to 5 hours of homework per week. Parents are encouraged to attend with their student.

The class itself consists of: mini-lectures on selected topics and a problem-solving seminar. The material for the mini-lectures is based on the summaries that can be found in the workbooks. However, since the lecture has more details and examples, students are expected to take notes during the lesson. The instructor will also produce a written transcript of the class in PDF format. Parents and students will receive the transcript for review and reference.

Pre-requisites: students must be able to handle fractions and percentages proficiently. Pre-algebra will be used throughout the entire course. Students are expected to handle well linear equations and remember quite well from level 2 how to factor into primes, and how to use strategies based on divisibility.

Students are expected to purchase their own copy of the level 3 workbooks (available on amazon.com or on www.goodsofthemind.com/store), have a desktop or laptop computer to work from (no mobile device), have paper and pencil available. This semester we will focus on Number Theory and Geometry.

Optionally, students in this class will also enroll in the Math Kangaroo, the Math Leagues, and the Paul Erdos competitions. Each month, we will discuss some of the problems posed in the previous month's competitions.

Each class is 70 minutes long.

The seminar is appropriate for students in grade 6 or students in grade 5 who are advanced.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Goods of the Mind was founded in 2007 as a provider of online competitive math classes. Since 2007, we have trained students who wish to participate in mathematics competitions from elementary grades to high school. Each year, many of our students qualify for the American Invitational Math Examination while some of them participate in the USAMO.

One of the founders is Mrs. Cleo Borac, who co-authored 11 volumes of the Competitive Mathematics Series, a top seller on amazon.com under 'Math education and training'. Her focus has always been on understanding what motivates students and how progress in problem solving actually occurs. As a result, we can say that we provide not only a lecture, or a tutorial, but a learning experience that is driven by the feedback from participants. We do not only teach, we also coach because we care a lot about what happens at the other end of the wire: what skills we try to develop or improve and how well we manage to do it.

We do not ‘lecture’ and the student does not ‘attend’. Instead, we work together. While other providers may teach the facts of math and science, we are more interested in the effect of our lessons on the students’ ability to create and build. A lecturer, no matter how good, delivers a lecture. We, on the other hand, work with the students through the topic. There is a difference. By working with students we learn a lot about their process, time constraints, goals, and what it takes to help them progress faster. With us, it is about each student.

At Goods of the Mind, we maintain a free repository of over 100 sets of lecture notes and over 400 original problems: www.mathinee.com is a free resource!

Sign up for our next webinar with parents to ask the questions that are important to you about your student's learning. Our webinars are not a sales pitch, but a genuine conversation that aims to share with parents some of our experience with hundreds of students.

Goods of the Mind is run by Cleo Borac, who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Bucharest, Romania, with a M. Sc. in applied physics, Andrei Borac, who graduated magna cum laude from the University of Washington with a degree in computer engineering, and Silviu Borac, a Ph. D. in mathematical physics from the Technical University in Berlin, Germany, former IPhO medalist, currently at Google.
