Class Experience

What will be taught?
Learners will learn about line, pattern, and color by creating a mug shape that they will add pattern and color to complete.

What topics will be covered?
This class will cover a variety of lines, patterns, and how they are created. Learners will then apply what they know about color to add their own color choices to complete their work.

How is the class structured?
We'll begin the class by reviewing what learners already know about lines and how they are used to create shapes and patterns. While we review, students will have the opportunity to socialize while we discuss by drinking cocoa together and observing any lines, shapes, and patterns they see on their own mugs. We'll then work through drawing a mug and tracing the lines with a black Sharpie. After that, we'll use either oil pastels or crayons to add patterns and lines to our mug, wall, and table. We'll finish these by using watercolor paint to paint over the page and create a crayon resist. We'll end the class by sharing our work and discussing what we learned.

What teaching style is used? How will learners get to interact with the teacher and each other?
I use varied methods while teaching, including discussion and observation with some demonstration. I encourage learners to ask questions and share with each other throughout the entire process.

There is no required experience or prior knowledge. I am happy to run this class for single learners and do not cancel due to low enrollment.
Learning Goals

Parental Guidance
Learners will be handling potentially messy materials. Parents may wish to supervise if they allow their learner to use a Sharpie. Learners may want to use a cup with a lid for their cocoa, to avoid accidentally putting their paintbrush in it.

I am a current art teacher and I am interested in how technology and art can be combined to create new artwork. I teach classes using traditional media like paint and colored pencil, but I've also taught young learners how to use clay, cameras, and computers to create an animation. We've also created artwork that lights up using a paper circuit and a class on robotics! I am also interested in theater, history, and science. I have been an art teacher for 15 years now, having completed a B.S. in art education and a Master of Arts in teaching with endorsements in art, middle school English, and science. I believe every student is capable and creative. I think that there's no limit to what a student can do once they are shown the basics and allowed to let their imagination run wild. I also support all kinds of learners and strive to make my classroom a safe place for everyone to create and feel comfortable sharing their creations with other learners. I am happy to teach classes with only one learner and don't cancel due to low enrollment.
