Class Experience

My students have inspired this class. I have seen the great imaginations and creativity of each student. Once we finish a class and I ask what are you going to write about next, I often hear I am not sure. That is very typical after pouring our hearts into a writing piece. This class loads tons of ideas for future stories. Sometimes a character will spark a need to write more right then. Other times a character might need to sleep in the notebook as it simmers in the mind of the creator. Instead of students assigned to write, they will desire to write. They learn how to develop characters and settings. We toss our characters into short stories with problems and solutions. Those ideas and short stories can stay just like that or grow into a bigger writing pieces.

Each class will be independent. A fresh writing activity in each class with no prior experience is necessary. We will draw characters, maps, and unique settings. We will create characters that come to life in our imaginations. We will go on virtual field trips. We will also tell short stories collaboratively and individually. Students will have stories in their minds and ideas on paper ready for a day of writing. Drop-in students are always welcome. After one class, students will have enough to write at least one story. Following is the character lineup. The settings will coordinate with the theme of the day. Students will not complete a story in class. Homework will not be assigned. Each week students exercise their imaginations. They learn how to create dynamic characters. Peer interactions create excitement and new ideas. All this leads to a desire to write, instead of a chore or assignment, to write. Students crave time to imagine and write on their own time.
