Does your child love cats? I sure do! Having four cats of my own has sparked me to study their behaviors and why they do the strange things that they do. Have you ever wondered why cats purr or have you seen your cat smell something and then make a REALLY weird face with it’s mouth open? There are actual reasons for these behaviors. Each week, students will learn about two or more of their cats strange behaviors. Students will be encouraged to share their experiences with these behaviors as they relate to their own cats, or cats they have seen. Students will receive a fact sheet before each class that they can keep and write notes on during the class. These handouts will need to be printed prior to class if your student wishes to keep their notes on the same page. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to make a cat toy for their cat. Week 1 Students will learn the reasons cats purr, why they roll on their backs, and why they headbutt us. Week 2 Students will learn why cats sometimes bite us when we pet them, why they knead, why they scratch, and why they spend so much time grooming. Week 3 Students will learn about why cats are scared of cucumbers, why they bring us "gifts", and why they cover (or don't cover) their "business" in the litterbox. Week 4 Students will learn about why cats make a funny face when they smell something new, why do they walk over things I am using, and why they don't always want to be around us. Week 5 Students will learn why cats like catnip and why they eat grass and houseplants. Week 6 Why cats may sometimes beg for food, and why they throw their toys in the air when they're playing. Students will have the opportunity to make a cat toy for their cat. (Materials list will be provided prior to the lesson.) After learning and talking about the weekly behaviors, students will have an opportunity to share their own cats with the class. * Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their cats or pictures of their cats to class. **Each student will receive their handout 12-24 hours prior to the start of the class. If a student enrolls less than 24 hrs prior to class start time, I will send the handout at my earliest convenience to make sure that there is plenty of time for printing. If you are not able to print the handout, learners are welcome to keep notes on a separate sheet. NOTE: This is a 6-week course. No classes will be scheduled for this section after week 6. * I do also offer this course as a flexible schedule course. ____________________________ CLASS EXPECTATIONS/MUTING: I work hard to encourage participation from the learners enrolled in my classes. In many of my lessons I prefer to leave learners unmuted because of the discussions necessary for the class. However, as an Outschool parent myself, I understand that there are times when learners need to be muted due to background noise that cannot be prevented. Parents, please feel free to mute your learners at your discretion. When there are instances where I need to utilize the mute function because of background noise or the type of lesson being taught, I will advise the students that they are being muted to limit the background noise. I like to go over the expectations I have with the students at the beginning of each class. In my lessons, students are required to raise their hand and wait for their name to be called before speaking. This shows respect to all learners and to gives everyone a chance to participate so it is important for students to abide by this rule and any other rules given at the beginning of class. I will use visual and verbal cues in an effort to remind young learners of these expectations. ____________________________ SIBLINGS: If you want more than one of your learners enrolled, each learner must have their own enrollment listed. That said, enrolled siblings are always welcome to share a screen during class. I sometimes offer discounts when several children from the same family are enrolled, so please feel free to message me if this situation applies to you. ____________________________ REFUNDS & TRANSFERS: Per Outschool's limited refund policy: "Full refund within 24 hours of purchase or up to a week in advance of the class." **Please ensure you are choosing the correct time when signing up. I teach various hours to suit many different time zones and, unfortunately, I am not able to fill a spot last minute if it is realized that the time of day was mistaken or the class was missed. This is a non-refundable policy. ____________________________ RECORDINGS: Recordings are not automatically shown in the classroom. I like to create a safe, open space for students to be themselves and want them to be as interactive as possible. If you would like access to the class recording or have missed class, feel free to message me so I can make it available to you. Please note that I do not get notifications if recordings are requested from the classroom tab, so messaging me is best. ____________________________ CLASS CANCELLATIONS: If a class has not met the minimum number of enrollments, it is subject to being canceled. I will send a message asking if you'd like a transfer to another date & time or full refund if the class is canceled. Automatic refunds are issued for no responses after original class start time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Raquel Abernathy and I am very excited to be a part of the Outschool community. I have four children of my own ranging in age from 8-19. I have been working with my own children from the time they were toddlers to not only prepare them for school, but also help them as they progress from kindergarten through 12th grade. I also have four cats, or as I like to call them... "fur babies".
I love teaching and have a passion for working with young learners! I am a firm believer that not everyone learns the same way, and am committed to finding different strategies to help each student get the most from the lessons taught in my classroom.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Management. I have my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification for both adult learners and young learners, and have been an online ESL teacher since February 2019. I own a table top game shop in my small town and enjoy running the after school game group throughout the school year for children in my community ranging from kindergarten - 8th grade. In the game group I teach not only strategic thinking, but also social skills with a focus on winning and losing gracefully.
Outside of teaching, I love spending time with my family, playing and snuggling with my cats, and playing board games. We are a family of hobby board gamer's and we are always looking for new strategy games to play. One of my favorite games is "7 Wonders Duel". My favorite family game is currently "Ticket to Ride". I love cats, and have gradually given my husband a love for cats that he didn't know he even had (We now have just as many cats, as we do children)! I spent two years living in Carterton, England (Oxfordshire). I fully immersed myself in the culture while there and found a love for all things British!
I look forward to seeing you in the classroom! :)
