In this four week course we will look at career opportunities in the Animal Science Industry. We will explore what is animal science?; What careers exist?; Where to go to school?; Where to find these jobs?

This course will be over a four week period. Class 1: What is animal science and what does a career in that area look like? Animal science is actually an area very large in biology and chemistry on one end, and customer service and people skills on the other. It is important for students interested in this area to understand that it isn't "just playing with puppies". This class is taught in English.
Students will be able to define what animal sciences is. Students will be able to identify and explain at least four careers in animal science. Students will be able to create a personal goal plan of how to obtain two different careers in animal science. Students will be able to create a map of courses and opportunities they need to get a career working with animals or animal related products.
Personally I grew up on a horse farm, and actually wanted to be a veterinarian until I went to college. While I love animals, I found I enjoy teaching students about animals as an agriculture teacher. I have taught equine science, veterinary science, small animal science, animal science, advanced animal science, biotechnology, and food science for almost 10 years now.
Homework Offered
Students will take the material from that days lesson and apply it through personalized opportunities to map or create opportunities for themselves.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Animal science and animal handling can be disturbing for some. As a life long animal science professional, and an agriculture teacher I am aware there are different views on animal handling. We will stick with discussing uses for animal as defined as humane by the USDA and American Veterinary Medicine Association. We will cover butchering and processing of animals, and animal breeders. Butchering will show some animal carcasses (retail cuts) but no images of an animal being killed. While we talk about breeders, we will not show any videos or images of animal reproduction.
