Class Experience

What to expect:
This lesson is designed for students who are new or beginning to learn Spanish. Students will be exposed to the Spanish language in a comprehensible and interesting way so that they can more naturally acquire and build their confidence in the language.

Class Layout: We will begin with a quick introduction of everyone. After briefly mentioning the class norms for conducting class, I will do an interactive and visual lesson in Spanish about our topic. This mini lesson will deliver facts about our featured fascinating animal in comprehensible Spanish vocabulary and structures. After the mini lesson, we will continue our interactive informal conversing about the topic and I will do a fun review game. To wrap up our time, there is usually a final activity for students to take a turn expressing a new word or fact they learned in Spanish.

During the lesson, I would love for the students to quietly observe the lesson and interact verbally & non-verbally (thumbs up/down, head nods). Students should stay muted until teacher takes them off of mute. They may write down notes if they would like. At the end of the lesson students will be invited to show their pet and introduce their pet in Spanish.

Will the student be expected to speak in Spanish?
I want to stress that the amount of participation from the student is completely voluntary. I try to build a class community where students feel brave to take the risk to try expressing themselves in Spanish. Mistakes are actually encouraged because that is what helps their proficiency grow. (My expectation for respect for everyone is part of my classroom norms that is mentioned at the beginning of the lesson.). Students will be exposed to Spanish 100% of our time unless there is something I need to clarify at the beginning regarding the norms or technical issues.

For students to continue to build their proficiency, I recommend the book "Capibara con Botas" by Mira Canion. This is a fun and fictional story about a Capybara that is written for a Novice learner of Spanish. I have had the chance to meet this author and I really enjoy using her stories with my young learners and I love supporting my colleagues who contribute to providing comprehensible literature for children in Spanish. https://fluencymatters.com/product/el-capibara-con-botas-novel/ It is not required that they have this book to take this course.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hola. I am Amelia Richter or La Profe Richter and I am going into my 18th year teaching Spanish. I have taught every grade from preschool through University. My most fulfilling language teaching experiences have come from being able to immerse students in core content and I am lucky to do so as a 4th grade Spanish immersion teacher, teaching math & science 100% in Spanish! My strongest inspirations come from having 3 young daughters who I hope are raised in a world language rich environment.

I hold a Masters degree in Spanish Linguistics with a concentration in Second Language Acquisition and a minor in Literature from New Mexico State University. I have lived and studied in Madrid, Spain at La Universidad de San Luis on two occasions and did some undergraduate studies in Segovia, Spain while obtaining two Bachelor of Art degrees in Spanish & Psychology from Wheeling Jesuit University.

From my professional achievements being named WV Foreign Language teacher of the year for WVFLTA and in the preparation to create a portfolio for Regional Teacher of the year for SCOLT, I solidified my area of passion regarding foreign language teaching. I am passionate that students have access to multi-lingual, multilevel, culturally diverse, and content rich foreign language exposure from an early age. For the young child, I love to offer language exposure through stories and songs. For the middle, high school, or advanced student, I enjoy learning the language through compelling content. I am also a grammar geek & love to offer language study classes. My main goal is that students feel like they are building their proficiency in the language to use it. I hope in the future they will do their talent, skill, or job in another language and I hope they will make the world a more empathetic place with their global experiences through language learning!

An interesting fact about me is that I have the personal philosophy to always be learning a new language so that I can always remember what it's like to be in my students' shoes. With my linguistics background I have fluencies in Spanish & Italian. Additionally, I have studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, ASL, and I am currently trying to learn Portuguese and Romanian.

I would be honored to being a part of your child's language learning journey!
