This class is designed for students that are reading long vowel words within a passage without assistance. This class is aimed at developing your students vocabulary. The class will begin by using the process of syllabication to break down unknown multisyllabic words. There are 6 rules to syllabication. The students will also do word study in the area of morphology understanding the meaning of prefixes and suffixes. We will also focus on words with in a passage using both context clues and inferencing skills. The students will also learn about synonyms and antonyms of the words that are introduced. This course will be presented in an interactive format. Students will be presented new information on google slides but activities will be presented in a game type format. For this class the students will need to have something to write with either pencil and paper or dry erase board and a dry erase marker. The following topics will be covered: Week 1 October 1st Introduction and the rules of Syllabication 1 and 2 Week 2 October 8th Rules of syllabication 1-3 and study of prefixes. Week 3 October 15 th Rules of syllabication 1-4 and study of prefixes, Week 4 October 29th Rules of Syllabication 1-4 and introduction to suffixes. Week 5 November 5th Rules of Syllabication 1-5 and suffixes Week 6 November 12th Rules of Syllabication and context clues Classes will continue till May Structures of classes Students build community through ice breakers Introduction of new skill being taught learn the new vocabulary skills with teacher direction of examples practice decoding vocabulary and using the skill with teacher work on new vocabulary word set individually homework practice of 1-3 words provided after class
Learning Goals
Students will use syllabication rules to decode multisyllabic unknow words. They will learn about prefixes and suffixes and how they affect the meaning of words. We also will use context clues and inferencing in small passages.

Supply List
Students will be given a one page hand out before class on the rules of syllabication we are using. Students will need either a paper pencil or dry erase board and dry erase markers markers for every class
