Class Experience

I have a bachelor’s degree in art and I have always enjoyed using my creativity in everything, including baking! For many years, I have been making themed cakes my children’s birthday parties, and now I want to pass on the joy of baking to my students! I have learned a variety of candy making techniques from a class at a local bake shop. My daughter is an avid baker and I have a lot of fun assisting her with baking and decorating cakes and cookies on a regular basis.
A lot of these items can be found in Dollar General, Michaels, Walmart, and some in Joanns. Joanns and Michaels both accept online coupons. Shell mold (or you can mold them by hand into a shell shape) Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085VVKZG7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_3M646W6N64KH5311NRPQ Cookie cutter(s) shell shape or any other beach related shape Sifter (to sift flour for cookies) 2 large mixing bowls Small bowl Frosting spatula ***Optional***Turntable (lazy Susan) cake stand (Michaels; Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Joanns) (2 ) 6” or 8” round cake pans ***Optional*** Cake leveler(Walmart, Michaels) ***Optional*** Cake Icing smoother(Michaels, Joanns) I would only get the cake icing smoother if you want to. It does make things a little easier, but it is not necessary and I will not be using it in the video. 1/2 cup measuring cup Stand up mixer or hand held mixer Grippy material- optional (Dollar Store) Whisk Rubber spatula 10” round piece of cardboard for base (Michales) or cardboard cut by you wrapped in foil :) Paper towels Wax paper Toothpicks 2 oven mits Wilton piping tip #3 Disposable icing bags Rolling pin Cookie sheet Food coloring- blue, purple, orange For cake: 2- Betty Crocker Super moist cake mix in the flavor you want. (If you chose a different box cake, that’s okay, but you will just need to make sure it calls for 3 eggs, and 1/2 cup oil or adjust your ingredients according to the directions on your box) 6 eggs 2 cups water 1 cup vegetable oil Non-stick cooking spray For cake frosting: 2 cups(4 sticks) softened butter 2 teaspoons vanilla 16 teaspoons milk 8 cups powdered (confectioners) sugar For cake decorating: 16 sheets graham crackers(or a small box) One small container white fondant For cookie dough: 2 1/4 cups Flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup unsalted butter (Softened to room temperature) 3/4 cup granulated (white) sugar1 large egg, at room temperature 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional, but it makes a great flavor) For cookie icing: Confectioners’ (powdered) sugar (we will be using 4 cups per recipe) Meringue powder (we will be using 3 Tbsp per recipe)(Michaels, Walmart) Water For cookie decorating: Cookie cutters(shells or any beach related shapes you would like) White Sugar pearls(edible) (Walmart, Michaels, Joanns)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and no time outside of class.
Parental supervision is advised, as we will be using a hot oven, some sharp tools, and other supplies that require supervision for safe use. It is always a good idea to make sure that there are no ingredients that your students may be using during the baking and decorating process that could be possible allergens for them.
