Class experience
Students do not need previous coding experience, but they do need to have an iPad or an M1 Chip Mac computer. They will learn to create apps using Wyz Create, a kid-friendly iOs platform that makes it easy and fun to bring your app ideas to life. This class is for ages 8-10, or learners who are new to iPad/software use. In this online live class, each student will: - Actively participate in developing a group idea with the instructor. In group development, the instructor will teach some...
This class is taught in English.
Fuel a passion for app-making and provide the basic fundamentals to do so. Learners will gain computer programming skills and a foundational approach toward app-making, which can be built upon in our further series offerings. The goals of this lesson are to familiarize with the button object, text object, and image object, as well as scripting for simple app navigation, sound, and visibility.
Our teaching team is led by Mrs. Amanda, the VP of Product Development and Partnerships at Wyz Kid Labs, LLC. Mrs. Amanda brings a wealth of experience to teaching, including hands-on experience developing several larger-scale deployed apps using the Wyz Create platform. Also on the team is: Dr. Awele Ndili, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Wyz Kid Labs, LLC. Dr. Ndili holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. In addition to inventing the Wyz Create platform, Dr. Ndili has had a wealth of experience in teaching, both at the elementary/middle school level (teaching the Wyz Create platform), and at the college level (teaching math to graduate students at Stanford). He was the lead Project Manager for the GPS system onboard Stanford University’s successful Gravity Probe B space satellite, launched by NASA in 2004. He was also a key technical lead in the successful child education software company Earthquest. Wyz Create is expanding! We've hired teachers nationwide to help us expand our reach across time zones. Our teachers are passionate about tech and introducing learners to it in fun and engaging ways. Check out our teachers through our Organization Profile.
1 file available upon enrollmentREQUIRED: a SECOND computer or device with camera + good internet connection for joining the Outschool Classroom attendance (i.e - laptop or desktop.) This allows the learner to have a visual of the teacher's lesson while they also follow along on their iPad simultaneously, because they otherwise cannot view Zoom and Wyz Create at the same time on their iPad. REQUIRED: iPad with Wyz Create installed. Make sure that your iPad is updated to the latest iOS version. (Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check.) The Wyz Create app is available for free in the Apple iOs Store and runs on iPad / iPhone, though we recommend iPad for ease of use. Make sure that your learner knows the iPad's unlock code in case the screen dims during class (or, you can adjust your screen's auto-lock settings to "Never"). Open this link on your iPad's web browser, and it should give you a pop-up from the app store to download directly: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wyz-create/id1451652817 OPTIONAL: free Cloud account on Wyz Create, created by parent and signed in ahead of class. Access sign-up screen in the Wyz Create app via the My Apps > My Cloud menu.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Per Wyz Create's community guidelines, learners under the age of 13 should have parental / teacher supervision while using Wyz Create. Learners between the ages of 13 and 18 represent that they have parental or guardian permission to use these product or services. Learners will not need to create an account or submit any personal information to begin use of Wyz Create - just download and start creating! If a learner would like to publish their apps, their parent or guardian can sign up for a Wyz Create cloud account and supervise their learners use of it. Use of the cloud account will only involve selecting "Share" and "Upload to Cloud" on the app they'd like to publish, and then clicking "Copy Link" on the app thumbnail once the app is uploaded to the cloud.
Wyz Create is a powerful, easy-to-use and open-ended app making platform that was created to facilitate and teach core programming concepts, enable creativity, and let users young and old turn app ideas into a reality. After years of success in...
