Class experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will learn about Deaf culture, history, and most importantly art!
I have a communicative level of American Sign Language after having been introduced to the language at age two. I took a community college ASL class where I continued to grow in my signing ability and also studied ASL on my on for many years through Dr. Bill Vicar's online university, Lifeprint.com. I am continually involved and interact with people in the deaf community through in-person and online ASL meetups and events and love sharing this amazing visual language and its surrounding history and culture with others.
Homework Offered
Students will create individual projects of their choice inspired by ASL culture and history. The amount of time spent on projects is completely up to the learner.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
We will go over the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement in which deaf protestors at Gallaudet University protested the election of a hearing president at their deaf university.

Some of the ASL story videos we will watch contain themes connected with death, car accidents, and heart issues. Please view the YouTube links included in the Sources section.

I will be discussing deaf history and the oppression faced by the deaf community at the hands of unsympathetic hearing individuals. This includes speech training, deaf flights conducted by Charles Lindbergh, and religious practices believed to cure deafness. I will also be touching on the Deaf President Now movement and the concept of eugenics. Since there are different views on values and practices within the deaf community, I will be presenting deafness from various angles. I will provide examples of common misconceptions held by hearing individuals according to members of the deaf community, but will also indicate that not everyone within their community thinks the same way. I will be discussing the differences between American Sign Language and Black American Sign Language (BASL), and the historical context that plays a significant role in these differences. I will briefly mention racial differences between Black and White roles as deaf individuals and sign. Additionally, there are many other cultures within the deaf community, and ASL is not the only accepted mode of communication. I will briefly touch on Hand Talk, an Indigenous Sign Language, to show the differing views on American Sign Language's origins. I will share personal examples of my experiences communicating with members of the deaf community who were both welcoming to learners and forgiving of mistakes, as well as those who were less patient. Students are encouraged to relate the information to their prior knowledge, but I will enforce propriety within the classroom. If there are any sensitive or potentially emotional questions, I will encourage students to ask their parents/guardians and redirect the conversation. I will issue a kind but firm warning to any students who persist in discussing topics that may be uncomfortable for others, and failure to comply will result in their removal from the class.
I will refer to the Deaf President Now movement (DPN), in which students at Gallaudet University protested the decision to reinstate another hearing president at the deaf university. We will watch a video pertaining to this important historical event. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h-MSbMrvNw&pp=ygUNYXNsIGdhdWxsYWRldA%3D%3D

We will go over the history of ASL and the repression that many ASL users faced due to the oral method, and eugenics. The following link is a video that will be shown in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=betAZeKRpR8

I will show a YouTube video describing how ABC stories work (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJWUedN8Pgc) and then I will show an expressive story signed in ASL for students to note the differences between regular signed stories and ABC stories. PLEASE NOTE that some of these stories refer to death and parental guidance may be necessary.

Several deaf ASL stories we will watch include:
An unexpected Event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD48RQLQurg
Don't Text and Drive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoRQGkf7CiA
Vital Signs: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxByYCXK6KQ9heI8Mt1s98h69X5W6E4PKp?si=aVEFNwvqhZMfskXq *This is only a clip, click the "Watch full video" button to see the rest of the story. We will not watch anything other than the Vital Signs story from the full video.*

Video about ASL by NPR - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa0nxppMJ-Q

We'll talk about how deaf people can dance to music and I'll show a video about a deaf man who became a dancer despite not being able to hear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbWyaDy9N1M

I will show several pictures of drawn, painted and sculpted Deaf art depicting various aspects of Deaf society and history. Many pieces of art will be by Chuck Baird and one of his pieces I will use and make mention of the Christian story of Jesus and his life and death in connection to a deaf artist's painting pertaining to that story.
