English level: Intermediate (Students should have strong proficiency in English, understand simple past tense, and read full sentences comfortably. This lesson uses some complicated sentence structures and higher vocabulary.) Teaching medium: PowerPoint, shared onscreen (no external sites required) Together, the class will practice eight vocabulary words before reading "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (retold) together from a colorful PowerPoint presentation. We will pause every few pages of reading for a check of comprehension. I give every student a chance to read, speak, and take part in the activities. There are cute and colorful illustrations to keep students' attention and imagine the story better. A brief biography of author Lewis Carroll is included. If your student can read this sample passage, he/she will be at a good level for this class: Alice became angry and began to walk away. As the caterpillar crawled away in the grass, he told Alice, “One side will make you taller, the other side will make you shorter.” Alice looked at the mushroom. She bit one side. It made her shorter! She bit the other side. It made her taller. She took a piece of each side of the mushroom. UPDATE: This lesson now includes a read-along story video for download. Students can use this to practice pronunciation and to recognize unfamiliar words. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" is a classic story. I look forward to sharing it with my students!
