US Grade 7 - 8
Intermediate Level
Welcome to A Semester of Research, Sources, and Essay Writing for 7th and 8th Grade! In this class, we will dive deep into some more advanced writing techniques that can be used to improve and enhance formal essays and papers. This course includes skills such as annotating, writing with a specific purpose and audience in mind, summarizing, critical thinking, and quoting and citing sources. Then, we will use those skills to write a persuasive essay and then an informative essay. I will respond to each assignment within a week (or less) of submission. Each assignment that is completed will get specific feedback from me praising its strengths and suggesting a challenge for the writer to rise up to moving forward. This is an asynchronous, self-paced class. In each lesson, the learner will watch a pre-recorded video on a given topic and then do an assignment to practice the skill they are learning. There are 18 lessons, and most, if not all, can be reasonably completed within a week. Please feel free to reach out if you need a bit more time. Video lessons vary in length depending on the topic, but most videos are around 5-10 minutes. By the end of this course, your learner will have increased confidence in their writing skills--and be closer to being ready for high school! Learning Needs
I am able to provide suggestions for support and/or modification of my lessons to make them accessible.
Pre-Requisites
This is an intermediate-level writing class. Students who have had at least some experience with formal academic writing (paragraphs and essays) will likely find this class to be a good fit.
Supply List
Articles and handouts will be provided in the lessons as needed. It is not necessary to print these, but in the case of the articles, I do recommend it since we are learning annotation skills and will be referring to these sources throughout much of the course.
