What's included

12 live meetings
12 in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students will receive a nightly assignment homework assignment that includes: 1. A worksheet or problem related to our lesson or current skill 2. A round of XtraMath for math fact fluency 3. Occasional extra work to support any misconception or further support needed after our lesson
Projects
One project based assignment per unit that related to the standards and concepts taught, and challenges student to deeper and more complex application of the skills.
Assessment
Students have 14 assessments throughout class - a mid-unit and end of unit assessment for each of the 7 units. One assessment is also the end of year test to ensure mastery of all skills before moving on.
Letter Grade
Students will receive 1 overall grade per unit, which will correlate directly with their master of the skills in that unit (as evidenced by homework assignments, assessments, and projects), and their completion of the work in the class.
Progress Report
Parents will receive a brief but thorough progress report weekly - it will include any missing assignments, a review of student performance on exit tasks, and any overall observations or review needs the student might have.

Class Experience

US Grade 5
5th-grade math is a pivotal year. It lays the foundation for middle and high school success. Before 6th grade, students need to strengthen their ability to manipulate complex mathematical concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence—all in an engaging, interactive environment.

This 6-week course aligns with the first unit of 5th-grade Common Core and NGSS standards place value and decimal learning. The class will provide a comprehensive and inquiry-based math experience. Through interactive lessons and real-world applications, students will deepen their understanding and apply math in meaningful ways.

📚 What Will Be Taught?
This course focuses on operations with fractions and decimals - including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with decimals up to the thousandths place. Students will learn to manipulate numbers using place value (multiplying and dividing by powers of 10), and lay a strong foundation for the rest of the year in math.

🔢 How Will We Learn?
This course is designed to be engaging and student-centered, featuring:
🔹 12 live lessons that build conceptual understanding and procedural fluency
🔹 Project-Based Learning (PBL) tasks at the end of unit, applying math to real-life scenarios
🔹 Daily practice problem sets to reinforce skills and build mastery
🔹 Mid-unit and end-of-unit assessment to track progress on each skill

🗓️ Full Class Class Structure
🔸 36-week program, meeting 2 times per week for 60 minutes
🔸 Live, interactive instruction with guided practice and discussions
🔸 Small-group problem-solving and real-world applications
🔸 Supportive learning environment that encourages critical thinking

📖 Daily Class Format
Each class follows a structured and engaging routine to build deep mathematical understanding:

1️⃣ Application Problem – We start with a challenging real-world problem that encourages students to apply math skills in new and creative ways.
2️⃣ Mini-Lesson – The day's concept is introduced through clear, structured instruction, helping students understand what skill they are mastering and track their own progress.
3️⃣ Small Group Practice – Students work collaboratively to solve problems, reinforcing their understanding and building confidence in the new skill.
4️⃣ Exit Task & Independent Practice – Students complete a 4-point exit task, providing both them and the teacher with immediate feedback on comprehension. If additional support is needed, Ms. Crocker assigns personalized supplemental activities to ensure mastery.

📚 Homework Expectations
To reinforce learning, students will:
✔ Complete a fluency round on XtraMath each night.
✔ Work through a practice worksheet that reinforces the day’s concept.
✔ Receive targeted support if they need extra help with the lesson.
✔ Complete an end-of-unit project, applying all learned concepts to a real-world scenario (this will require some out-of-class time).

This structured approach ensures consistent practice, confidence-building, and long-term retention of key math skills! ✨

Learning Goals

Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as the place to its right.
Use exponents to express powers of 10.

I’m Ms. Crocker, an experienced math teacher with a passion for holistic, inquiry-driven instruction. As a student, I struggled with math. The emphasis on memorization and algorithms left little room for my creative and critical-thinking skills. I vividly remember sitting in my 5th-grade classroom, staring at a worksheet, desperately trying to recall each step of the division algorithm. My teacher guided me through it, but without her help I was lost—I didn’t even understand why I was manipulating numbers. I was simply following rules I didn’t truly grasp.

To be honest, it wasn’t until I started teaching 5th-grade math myself that these concepts really came alive for me. The way we teach math today can feel unfamiliar—even tedious—to adults who grew up with rote memorization. But watching kids learn to approach problems with curiosity, think deeply about what’s being asked, and tap into their own reasoning skills makes all the tediousness of new strategies worthwhile. My goal is to help students not just follow steps, but truly understand math in a way that empowers them to think, explore, and succeed. I strongly believe that creative problem solving and critical thinking will make them stronger mathematicians who are prepared for higher level math, in their lives.

I hold a B.A. in Political Science, and M.S. in Teaching & Learning from Colorado State University, an M.A. in International Comparative Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. I am certified in K-6 Elementary Education, and 7-12 Social Studies in Colorado. I taught 5th grade math from 2017-2022, and overall have 10+ years experience teaching upper elementary.
