5 Days in New York City With a New Yorker. Start Spreading the News.
This week we will be visiting my New York. I've been a new Yorker for 11 years & would love to show my students Times Square, Central Park, Wall Street, Metropolitan Opera, and get them a cooking lesson from one of this city's top chefs.
1. Times Square, Broadway, and street food. We'll will take the NYC subway to 42nd Street. Let's make our way through Times Square and take in the lights, flashing advertisements, NBC studios entrance (shall we wait in line for Jimmy Fallon?), and Radio City Music Hall. Then we will visit Rockefeller Center and the amazing Lego and Nintendo stores located there. We will see a few mythological figures in this area... can you spot them? All along the way we will be seeing and tasting authentic...
Students will gain an understanding of the history of New York and its most famous sites. They will also learn how to navigate Central Park and how to create one of Chef Ashfer Biju's dishes from the Pierre Hotel. Fun and Yum!
Hello! I’m Sondra Rapoport, your friendly neighborhood historian. I have been a New Yorker for 11 years and have enjoyed studying and teaching its dynamic history. I taught with Harvard University's Dept. of Classics for 6 years as a Head Teaching Fellow. I was privileged to teach the popular and historic The Rome of Augustus won awards for distinction in teaching each semester I taught with Harvard. Now, I homeschool my son and I greatly enjoy adapting my knowledge and classes designed for university level to each of his grade levels.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will be speaking live to the students as well as using a wide variety of slides from my travels around the world. I welcome questions before, during, and after the class. A class that interacts with the material learns it at a deeper level and I welcome questions at any time during the class. Each class will begin with a main question or idea for the students to keep in mind, as they will see the theme reappear. The classes will all end with guided discussion based upon the main question and any interesting questions or comments. This will not be ‘dead air’ time, students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and questions. All photographs are my own.
