Class Experience

Hi there! I am SO excited to learn with you!

In this engaging course, “2nd Grade Math: Foundations of Addition Using Base 10 Blocks”, students will develop a firm foundation for place value and number sense before adding. They will develop a deep understanding about what a number is composed of which will set them up for life long math success. Students will be taught using a variety of digital manipulatives, visuals and physical manipulatives called "Base 10 Blocks". This is a very interactive and engaging course where students are constantly doing activities and work to show proof of understanding and clear up any misconceptions.

This is a 4 week course designed for 2nd graders to help them develop a strong foundation for adding and eventually building on that foundation by adding 3 digit numbers. Incoming 3rd graders needing an "addition refresher" are welcome as well. Students will learn the foundations of addition using strategies that are taught in typical public school classrooms. The lessons will be structured in the following way:

Week 1: Introduction to Place Value

Vocabulary (base 10, place value chart, value, cube vs long, etc.)
Value of numbers
Placing numbers in place value chart
Skip counting by 10s
"Kahoot" review game

Week 2: Representing Numbers in Multiple Ways

Review previously taught content
Expanded Form
Base 10 Form
Word Form
Number Form
"Kahoot" review game

Week 3: Introduction to 3 Digit Addition

Review previously taught content
Start adding 3 digit numbers using strategies taught
“I do, we do, you do” practice using place value chart and manipulatives

Week 4: Practice 3 Digit Addition

Review previously taught content
Continue adding 3 digit numbers using strategies taught
“I do, we do, you do” practice using place value chart and manipulatives
"Kahoot" Review game

In order for students to be successful in this class, they should have background knowledge for adding 1 and 2 digit numbers and know basic math facts (ex. 2+7=9). I will teach using a variety of digital manipulatives, physical manipulatives and drawings. My teaching style focuses on being engaging, encouraging and making the learning environment a safe and comfortable place where students know that it’s okay to make mistakes because that is how we learn!

As an experienced 2nd grade teacher, I know the value of small group instruction. The needs of your learner will be catered to so much more than in a large classroom setting. Also, getting practice before going into 2nd grade will increase your learners confidence and help them gain a deeper understanding of math.

*Learners will need a whiteboard and marker (preferably) or a pencil and paper so they can follow along and do practice problems*

Learning Goals

Students will learn the foundations of addition and use place value strategies to add 3 digit numbers without regrouping by the end of this course.

I am a certified classroom teacher with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I have taught 2nd grade for 2 years and I completed my internship in 5th grade and Kindergarten classrooms. I am reading endorsed and ESOL endorsed. Being a 2nd grade teacher, I know what math strategies are used in the classroom and what will be expected of your student. I believe small group instruction is incredibly valuable and that by learning 2nd grade concepts early, students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the content once they are back in the classroom.
