Class Experience

Late beginner and early intermediate ukulele students can to take this 30 lesson course on how to finger-pick and strum their ukulele. Videos will be approximately 20 minutes each.

We will be using the Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 2, which should be purchased by the students before class begins.

Taking Ukulele 101 is a prerequisite for this class.

Students should have a soprano (small), concert (medium) or baritone (large) 4-string ukulele to use for all classes.

In this class, students will continue to learn to pick new notes such as C-sharp, B-flat, G-sharp and E-flat. Students will also review the chords learned in Ukulele Method Book 1 as well as learn several new chords, for a total of 20 chords used in this course, plus moveable chords. They will also learn several new strum patterns, such as the "ragtime strum", "calypso strum", the "five-finger roll stroke" and "the triplet stroke" as well as these picking techniques: hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides.

Lastly, the students will learn to pick and/or strum a variety of songs, such as "When the Saints Go Marching In", "Camptown Races", "Worried Man Blues", "Cripple Creek", "Uke Boogie in G" and "Greensleeves".

I will use flash cards and audio/video recordings as I teach various concepts.

Since practice is an important part of learning an instrument, I recommend that students practice 10-15 minutes, 4 days per week for a total of 40+ minutes of practice per week. Practice logs will be provided.

Since this is a self-paced class instead of a live class, I will check student's progress by giving them the opportunity to send audio and/or video recordings to me approximately every 4 lessons. I will assign an optional song or page for the students to practice, record and send to me. I will provide personalized written feedback for each recording the students send. I will also include models of how to correctly play each song in my pre-recorded videos.

I have taught this curriculum in school settings for 10+ years. I am passionate about music and look forward to teaching your child to play their ukulele!
