US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
Does your child read well, but has a hard time remembering what they read? When students aren't retaining what they read, they become very frustrated and develop a negative opinion about reading. However, when students learn the strategies to help them understand and retain more of what they are reading, they begin to enjoy reading and they will want to read more, which leads to better grades, and more confidence. Here is our syllabus. You can start at any time as the classes will start over after twelve weeks so your child can catch any classes they missed. Week 1 - January 6th - Pre-reading skills Week 2 - January 13th - Making predictions Week 3 - January 20th - Questioning Week 4 - January 27th - Visualizing while reading Week 5 - February 3rd - Reading out loud for retention Week 6 - February 10th - Prior knowledge Week 7 - February 17th - Inferring Information Week 8 - February 24th - Active reading strategies Week 9 - March 3rd - Text Evidence Week 10 -March 17th - Annotating while reading Week 11 - March 24th - Using Webs and Mind-mapping Week 12 - March 31st - Searching for Details Parent communication is important to me. I send an email after class to everyone sharing what we covered in class and questions you can ask your child to check for their understanding and retention. I also will reach out to you individually to share my thoughts on how your child is doing in the class. I welcome you to reach out to me with any comments, concerns, or questions as well. I teach that practice makes progress. The more we practice the better we get. Therefore, I also send practice after each class, however, I provide the answers so there is no need to return them to me. This allows you to see if your child understands or still needs more practice.
