🌈 This is a weekly, ongoing class in which we will read a variety of engaging texts, both fiction and non-fiction.

📘 In reading closely for meaning, we will learn to identify key ideas and details, understand language (including figurative language and literary terms) and text structure, and make connections and inferences.

📗 We will also learn how to annotate a text using useful symbols and make relevant notes to assist in our comprehension.

📕 As we read, we will employ self-monitoring strategies (such as visualization, asking questions, drawing conclusions, and rereading for clarification) to check our understanding of what we are reading, as well as identify and address what we do not understand.

📙 Finally, and with time allowing, we will respond to a set of comprehension questions to consolidate our understanding of each passage.

📗 Understanding and developing these skills and strategies will help students to become independent critical-thinkers in not only reading comprehension but across all areas of their learning journey.

📘 Comprehension texts and questions will be posted on our classroom page weekly for students to print out and work with during our sessions together.

🌈 Critical reading is a passion of mine, and I would love to work with your learner in these fun and engaging sessions. I am a positive, relaxed, and enthusiastic teacher. I encourage all students to contribute and share in our class discussions. However, should your learner prefer just to listen please do let me know; this is absolutely fine too.

You are so welcome to reach out to me through the messaging system if you have any questions at all, and I look forward to meeting your learner soon :-).

PLEASE NOTE:
This course curriculum repeats itself in February of each year, and meets learning standards for Grades 4-6.

I am the owner of New Heights English Tuition and a qualified Classroom School Teacher with a degree in English Literature and Poetry. I gained a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification in 1997 and have extensive experience working with ESL students. I have over twenty years' teaching experience, and for the past eight years have enjoyed working with students in a private capacity in all areas of English language development, from the elementary stage right through to middle- and high-school years. This includes vocabulary development, speaking skills, writing skills, reading skills, reading comprehension, and critical analysis of complex texts. I have always been an avid reader and would love to share this enthusiasm in supporting your learner's own reading journey!
