Nightmare Before Christmas Jack Skellington Themed Dragon Sculpture Course: Sculpt, Paint & Create!

Course Overview: In this 4-lesson, self-paced course, students will learn how to sculpt and paint a Jack Skellington-themed dragon. Each lesson features step-by-step guides, along with video and audio instructions, designed to break the process down into manageable segments. While there are no live meetings, students can share their work and receive feedback at their convenience.

This course is ideal for students with prior experience handling air-dry clay. Though beginner-friendly in concept, air-dry clay can be tricky for newcomers, so it’s recommended to practice with it before starting.

Course Requirements:

This is not a beginner sculpting course. Some experience with sculpting and air-dry clay is beneficial.
Light armature (wire) will be used, so basic sculpting skills are needed.
Air-dry clay can take time to master, so practice beforehand.

Materials Needed:

Air-dry clay (white modeling compound, like Sculpey or Crayola)
Sculpting wire or jewelry wire (easy to bend, thick)
Wire cutters
Clay cutting knife
Basic sculpting tools
White and black acrylic paint (or acrylic paint markers/pens)
Medium flat brush and super fine round brush
Glue (optional for final details)

Course Breakdown:

Lesson 1: Sculpt the body and tail of the dragon. Allow to dry for several days.
Lesson 2: Begin the formation of the head. Let dry for several days.
Lesson 3: Sculpt the arms and wings. Allow to dry for several days.
Lesson 4: Add final details and paint your Jack Skellington-themed dragon.

Target Audience: This course is perfect for individuals with some experience in air-dry clay sculpting, particularly those who enjoy themed art and character creation. Whether you're a hobbyist or an aspiring sculptor, this course will guide you through the process of creating a stunning 3D dragon sculpture!

Hi There!
I'm Lori...a graduate of F.I.T in NYC. I've worked in different areas of the design industry since 1991, from illustration, pattern making, garment construction to designing full story boards for buyers. I tutored Fashion Illustration for a few years to help other students complete their professional portfolios before their interviews. Besides getting creative, I LOVE animals! I have quite a few furry little beasts. Right now, my profession is Graphic Design, but fashion illustration and design is still what I do when I need to unwind from technology. I believe that once you learn the basics of how to get that creativity out of your mind and onto paper, you open up a whole new world, being able to share and build on your talents.

They/Them
As an alumni of Cleveland Institute of Art with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Game Design they have a passion for interactive art and how they can push the boundaries of what interactive art means. Having been a visual arts assistant at their old high school Interlochen Arts Academy during the summers, teaching others and seeing the joy in what people create has motivated Rori to pursue teaching. In their free time Rori likes to aquascape. Creating aquariums of any variety of sizes and making little beautiful habitats for their favorite type of fish a Betta fish, they currently have 2 bettas and 4 tanks.

She/Her
Throughout my career in education, I have developed a strong foundation for fostering creativity and critical thinking among students. I have had the privilege of designing and implementing art programs that engage learners and inspire them to explore their unique artistic voices in many afterschool programs since 2019. My extensive experience across various mediums—such as painting, yarn and needlework, jewelry making, and digital arts—has equipped me with the versatility to adapt my teaching methods and cater to diverse learning styles.

*Teacher Jonathan
I have been working in the design/visual arts world for the last 6 years. From designing websites, to doing personal commissions, art is something I’m very passionate about. I had the chance to live in New York for the last 3 years, and had the opportunity to visit world-renowned museums and galleries such as The Met, MoMA, Guggenheim etc. I also curated an Art Gallery with over 200 artworks from local artists in upstate NY. I’m thrilled to bring my experience to these lessons and share that enthusiasm with my students.
