Every week a supply list will be posted in the classroom. Most weeks will only require a notebook, coloring materials and a pen or pencil. However, there are a few weeks where extra supplies will be needed for a recipe.
Please note that this novel includes themes of racism, racial slurs, stereotypes, cultural inaccuracies, harmful and inaccurate descriptions of Native Americans, stereotypical/racist imagery, and biased perspectives in certain chapters. As students are reading/listening to this novel at home deeper questions on these issues should be directed to their grown ups as each household may have a different way that they would like to answer these questions. However, in class I will not be mentioning these issues unless they come up in questions. If questions arise I will make sure to get students to consider both sides of the situation and what each group of people may have been feeling at this time. These conversations will be kept to an age appropriate level and because of time limitations questions may be referred back to the grown ups in the home. If you are looking for help explaining these topics I suggest going to the following website. It explains the Indigenous People's perspective and offers many resources where you can further explore both sides of the story.
There are many teachable moments in the Little House series. If you are looking to explore both sides I suggest visiting this website and reading some of the articles and books it suggests.
