Class Experience

In this interactive baking class, learners will create the iconic Sweet Potato Pie 🥧 made famous by Patti LaBelle, also known as “Patti Pies.” As we bake, we’ll honor the culinary contributions of Black female chefs and connect the art of cooking with history and culture.

This step-by-step class is designed for beginner and intermediate bakers, with guidance on every aspect of the recipe. From mixing ingredients to perfecting pie assembly, students will leave with the skills and confidence to recreate this delicious dessert at home. Together, we’ll place our pies in the oven, learn how to recognize when they’re perfectly baked, and finish the session with music that celebrates the spirit of this dish.

What to Expect:

A live, hands-on experience where I demonstrate every step in real time (no pre-recorded videos).

Detailed instruction on pie-making, including tips for flavor, texture, and presentation.
Kitchen safety reminders, including adult supervision recommendations for using the stove and oven.

What’s Included:

🥧Ingredient and supply list provided upon enrollment.
🥧Full guidance and support throughout the session.
🥧A fun and engaging environment that celebrates culture, food, and history.

Note: Students should have basic baking or cooking experience, and an adult may need to assist with the oven or other equipment for safety.

Parental Guidance
Parental guidance is needed in assisting the learner in the kitchen as students will be using items such as ovens and other cooking equipment. Parents should be available in case of accidents or emergencies and ensure the learner knows how to properly operate the kitchen equipment. We will discuss safety in class. Outschool policy is that parents remain off-camera and only the enrolled learner may participate. Because of the nature of cooking and baking classes and safety, all cameras must remain on and learner and cooking area must be in focus. Families need to notify the instructor ASAP about any potential allergies. Most times, substitutions can be made for many. Each family is responsible for knowing what ingredients their family can have. Please contact the instructor for any questions. Learners will be instructed in food safety and kitchen safety during class. Check out my schedule for more classes in this very special series.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I’m Mrs. Lisa, a professional culinary educator with nearly 30 years of experience teaching cooking, baking, and nutrition to learners of all ages, from toddlers to seniors. My love for food began as a child baking Southern classics with my grandmother, and I’ve since pursued formal training at Immaculata University (B.S. in Food and Nutrition Science, minor in Child Development) and Le Cordon Bleu Boston, as well as numerous culinary workshops.

As an instructor, I combine my expertise with a passion for making learning fun and interactive. I believe food brings people together, and my goal is to empower kids with kitchen confidence while teaching the science, culture, and joy of cooking. In this class, I’ll help your child create a delicious recipe and learn valuable life skills.

When I’m not teaching, I love traveling, hosting dinner parties, and sharing food experiences with my family. I’m so excited to welcome your child to my kitchen classroom—let’s bake something amazing together!
