In each class, there will be a discussion on 1 growth mindset concept below, and the girls can discuss it relative to things they have experienced or read about key growth mindset concepts including: 1. ‘I already know all I need to know’ vs ‘I know that there is more than I can learn’ 2. ‘Feedback is criticism' vs 'feedback is an opportunity for me to learn about where I can improve’ 3. ‘What’s the point in trying if I’m going to fail’ vs ‘It’s always good to try, failure is a learning curve’ 4. ‘Why learn new things, there will always be someone who is better at it than me’ vs ‘It is always good to expand my skills repertoire’ 5. ‘There is no more room for promotion, I might as well stick where I am’ vs ‘I know I can develop further, how do I do this to take my care self’ A growth mindset is the belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through hard work and effort. It's different from a fixed mindset, where people believe their basic qualities are fixed traits. Teaching students in this way is the idea of a growth mindset, where individuals believe their ability and talents can improve over time with hard work and effort. By fostering a growth mindset, students are taught to embrace challenges with open arms, and failure is viewed a learning experience. Fixed and growth mindsets profoundly affect the way that individuals respond to failure. People with a fixed mindset view failure as a result of their lack of ability, while people with a growth mindset see the opportunity to expand their abilities and to work harder and smarter. The fixed mindset vs. growth mindset dichotomy can also be expressed in terms of goals. While the basic concept of fixed mindset vs. growth mindset is simple, mindset designations are much more nuanced in reality. An important factor of the mindsets is that they can be different in different domains. For example, a person may have a growth mindset in athletic or artistic endeavors but have a fixed mindset in academic endeavors. Each week in this class, girls will meet to discuss a different growth mindset topic. The focus will be on using the concept on self-empowerment, pursuing their interests, reaching their goals, and overcoming obstacles, in a safe environment with other girls.
