In this class students will practice reading basic musical notation in bass and treble clef, and learn some foundational music theory!

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Notation
Systems of notation, notation conventions, musical alphabet, clefs, key groups on keyboard, introduction to intervals.
Lesson 2
Placing Notes on the Staff
Bar lines and Measures, Scales, Arpeggios, Intervals expanded. Note values, time signatures. Notation convention- endings and repeats.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Introduction to Rhythm Patterns
How to read rhythm, clapping, metronome use, time conventions and markings. Name that tune! Identifying tunes by rhythm.
Lesson 4
Experimenting with basic composition
Use of note flight, gimkit to review concepts from prior classes and application of concepts. Introduction to Circle of Fifths and key signatures.
This class is taught in English.
Students will understand and apply a system of notation, and identify the following correctly:
Lines
Spaces
Staff
Measures
Note Values

Students will understand and apply an understanding of pitch: 
high and low pitches
Skips
Steps
Jumps.
Scales.
Intervals.
Arpeggios.

Students will understand and apply an understanding of both Treble and Bass Clef and how they interact on the master staff. 

Students will understand and apply an understanding of the conventions of music, such as:
The musical alphabet
Key signatures
The Circle of Fifths
Reading musical notation and identifying simple tunes. 

Students will understand and apply an understanding of the basics of theory in their final composition project. 
Violin and Viola teacher for all ages for 7+ years.
Violinist for 20+ years. Violist for 3+ years. 
Participated in community music groups, and music education in early learning settings for 5 years.

Assessments Offered
Learner progress is assessed through their demonstration in class of understanding and applying the learning goals. Also each student will be graded based on their final composition project. Grades available upon request.

Musical composition notebook ($3.99 on Amazon) 
There are also free printables of music composition pages on google, they should be blank sheets with no clef symbols.

If a student does not have access to these things, please review the class resources. They can provide similar tools online.  
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Tools used in class on screen share will include: 
Musicca tools (such as metronome or online piano.) 
Online piano tool
These tools will be used to determine pitch sounds and musical alphabet placement on a piano keyboard. 

Students will need to get a free noteflight account for their final composition project. This is optional as students can complete this project using musical composition paper instead. 
We may refer to publicly available musical works during our reading musical notation.
