In this ongoing class students will learn a new foundational skill for solving multiplication and division word problems. Students will be taught how to utilize the strategies of: Base 10, expanded form, repeated subtraction and addition, equal groups, and arrays. These strategies can be applied to both multiplication and division word problems and will help students better understand the foundations of multiplication and division which will better prepare them for more advanced word problems in the future. At the end of this series of classes there will be 4 classes involving 2-step word problems that will dedicated to helping students determine which operation is needed to solve a word problem. In each class meeting, students will be given many opportunities to share out their thought process and interact with classmates to solve word problems. Each class is also designed using the gradual release model which provides students with high support from the teacher in the beginning of the class and students are able to preform tasks independently by the end of the lesson. Following is a schedule of the first 14 weeks of class topics: Schedule for Classes: Week 1 (Week of August 4, 2024): Multiplication Repeated Addition Week 2 (Week of August 11, 2024): Multiplication With Arrays Week 3 (Week of August 18, 2024): Multiplication With Base 10 Week 4 (Week of August 25, 2024): Multiplication With Equal Groups Week 5 (Week of September 1, 2024): Multiplication With Expanded Form Week 6 (Week of September 8, 2024): Division With Repeated Subtraction Week 7 (Week of September 15, 2024): Division With Arrays Week 8 (Week of September 22, 2024): Division With Equal Groups Week 9 (Week of September 29, 2024): Division With Fact Families Week 10 (Week of October 6, 2024): Introduction to Remainders in Division (Using Arrays) Week 11 (Week of October 27, 2024): Week of February 7-13: The Associative and Commutative Properties of Multiplication Week 12 (Week of November 3, 2024): Week of February 14-20: The Distributive Property of Multiplication Week 13 (Week of November 10, 2024): Week of February 21-27: Identifying the Associative, Commutative, and Distributive Properties

As a current 3rd grade public school teacher of 5 years and a current Outschool teacher, I know that students simply learn different today than they did only a few years ago. This knowledge has required me to find creative and fun ways to provide Common Core curriculum to students in a different and refreshing ways that fits how kids learn today. When designing classes for Teaching Done Different it is always my aim to help students learn rigorous material in such a fun way that they don't even realize they are learning.
