Advanced Level
This camp is designed as a Harry Potter book club led in the Socratic style, which means that members will have the chance to introduce topics that are important to them with a following organic discussion among members encouraged by me, the facilitator. No single book will be examined unless members would like to "go there." Instead, broad ideas that can (and should) pertain to most, if not all, of the books will be the focus of each day's discussion. We will begin each of the three classes with short get-to-know-you activities and then slide into discussion. The Socratic style encourages acceptance and respectful debate among members; therefore, all participants will learn how to disagree or agree while valuing fellow Harry Potter fans by using verbiage we will practice such as: What do you mean by that? How do you know? Can you give me an example? I would like to propose a counterargument If members struggle to introduce suitable discussion topics, I will offer an idea or two; however, the vision for each discussion is for it to be student-led as much as possible.
Learning Goals
Students will find meaning in their reading, develop critical thinking and reading skills, and develop social skills in a safe and respectful atmosphere.
