Week 1
Lesson 1
Author's Purpose and Point of View
We will cover how and why an author will write something and the importance of that, as well as the points of view for writing. We will do some practice in class on these topics. Students will choose a book to read through the class and we will refer to those books as the weeks continue. 
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Genre and Theme
We will cover all the types of genre in books and some in movies as well with some fun references and examples, and we will cover themes in depth. This is a tough topic for students and is highly tested on.

Lesson 3
Plot Structure
We will go through the entire layout of a plot structure, with examples and practice. 
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Characterization and Setting
We cover characterization in depth and how to break down characters, ways they are described to us, and more. 
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Compare and Contrast
This is a fun week where we have discussion based class and work on compare and contrast which is the most seen text structure they use in school.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Text Structures
These are very tough for students and this week we will break them down and cover all the main types of structure something can be written in: cause and effect, problem solution, description, etc.

Lesson 7
Inference and Context Clues
Another important week in which we cover how to make inferences, which are educated guesses, and also use context clues to figure something out in text.

 Literary Devices Part 1
We cover major devices used in literature and English
 Week 9

 Literary Devices Part 2
We cover major devices used in literature and English
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Poetry and Intro to Writing 
This week we break into writing and grammar. We do some fun writing in class and have some discussion on poetry and intro to writing. 
 Week 11
Lesson 11
Sentence Structure
We cover solid sentence building, types of sentences, how to expand their writing style, and do a lot of practice in class. 
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Punctuation and Capitalization 
We work on going over capitalization errors I see in many students, covering commas use, semicolon and colon, and more. We will practice a lot this week. 
 Week 13
Lesson 13
Verb tense, Active, Passive, Adverbs, Adjectives
 This week we work on making better descriptive sentences. We work on moving things around to create good writing, add detail, but also things to watch for in writing including verb tense. 
 Week 14
Lesson 14
Phrases, Clauses and Writing Detail Sentences
We cover the differences between phrases and clauses and do a lot of practice on them in class. 
 Week 15
Lesson 15
Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Quoting
This week is one of the most important where we cover how to properly summarize and paraphrase information used in their writing from another source.  
 Week 16
Lesson 16
Organizing, Outlines, and Types of Resources 
They will learn how to organize writing, see types of resources they can use in writing, and more. 
 Week 17
Lesson 17
Essay writing (Opinion and Argumentative) and Citations (In-text and Works Cited
This week we cover the full proper layout of 5 paragraph essays. I cover this longer in my writing classes, but they will get introduced to it. 
 Week 18
Lesson 18
Editing, Revising, and Textual Evidence (Fact vs. Opinion)
This is our final week where we work on editing and revising things we write, as well as learning fact from opinion in writing and resources.
