Learning to Read is a complicated process for most students. Children learn spoken language quite easily just by listening and learning from their environment. Reading is a much more complex process. Reading involves taking the learned spoken sounds and connecting them to letters and words. Research has shown the most effective way to learn to read is by using the Science of Reading. The Science of Reading is a proven method of teaching reading. It has five main pillars or areas: 1. Phonemes - learning the 44 distinct sounds of the English language 2. Phonics - Connecting sounds to letters and words 3. Fluency - Ease of speed of reading 4. Vocabulary - Known words 5. Comprehension - Understanding what is read Annette the Teacher is a trained, certified Science of Reading Specialist. In this very small group class, students will be taught pre-reading print awareness, phonemes, and phonics using proven techniques. Learning to read is very repetitive. During each class, students will review previous skills through practice and exercises. Then they will be taught a new skill. They will practice the new skill through exercises and repetition. All lessons use presentations, slides, worksheets, games, and interactive elements and manipulatives. The class format is: Welcome and warm-up: Students are welcomed into class Review: A previous skill is reviewed and practiced New Skill: A new skill is introduced and practiced Wrap-Up: We review and reinforce what we learned during the class Hand-outs: Hand-outs will be introduced throughout the course of the class. Some of these will be used during the class. Please make sure you have printed out and prepared the handouts for each class when asked to do so. Some hand-outs are for your use and review with your child. Hand-outs will be listed on the class page as PDF files. They will be available by Friday for the following week. Please check the class page weekly for the handouts and print them out. The content of the class builds throughout the class. The general format is listed below. If the students in a particular class need more practice on a particular skill, the format may change. Week 1: Getting to know you, initial assessment, introduction to learning in a formal setting, print awareness, letters Week 2: Print awareness, pre-reading activities, introduction to syllables Week4 3: Syllables, introduction to letter sounds - consonants Weeks 4 and 5: Syllables, letter sounds - consonants Week 6: Introduction to short vowel sounds Week 7: Introduction to first and last letter sounds in words Week 8: Review and practice, assessment Week 9: Letter sounds Week 10: Introduction to CVC words Week 11: More CVC words Week 12: Review and assessment Please note: It takes most children a few years to learn to read well.
