Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Short answer questions can be difficult for students to know how to answer, but mastering this style of written response is an essential step to becoming a confident writer. Unlike multiple choice and true/false questions, short answer questions have no answers to choose from—students have to recall and summarize ideas in their own words. This class will help students practice the skills needed to write short response answers that can precisely and clearly answer a question based on prompt.

I made this class with the following types of students in mind:
- Learners who are able to answer questions verbally but may have trouble writing down their ideas
- Learners who can answer with single word written answers but struggle with forming complete answers
- Learners who need support with critical thinking

Responses will be based on a variety of prompts. Some weeks, learners will write responses to pieces of writing like an article or an excerpt from a book, while other weeks they will practice responding to prompts based on a video or picture we look at together in class. Responses will vary in length, from single complete sentences to a paragraph or two.

Response strategies that we practice in class will vary from week to week, depending on the theme of the class. Below is a list of our upcoming class topics

Week of Jan. 5: Writing about yourself
Week of Jan. 12: Summarize a piece of literature
Week of Jan. 19: Describe a scene based on a literary example
Week of Jan. 26: Paraphrase the meaning of a text

Camera Policy: Because this class has a large writing component, I require learners to keep their cameras on throughout the class. This helps me make sure your learner is staying on task and doing the class activity, and it also make the class more enjoyable overall when we can all see each others faces. The only exception will be for learners who have been pre-approved by Outschool Security to have their cameras off.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a professional academic and creative writing editor. I have worked on college admissions boards vetting application essays, edited papers for graduate and post-graduate researchers, and have taught Bibliography and humanities research courses. I am a very thorough editor with an eye for correct grammar, tonal and colloquial accuracy (using the correct tone based on the writing task), and fact checking. I believe that students learn how to improve their writing by learning how to edit what they write, and I focus on teaching students how to effectively edit their own work rather than simply telling them what to change.
