Class Experience

This 45-minute tutoring session is designed for students in grades 7-12 seeking individualized support for their academic needs in English, Language Arts, and Reading. Whether your student is working on literary analysis, writing assignments, or needs assistance with reading comprehension, I will meet your student where they are and help them work through the material. My goal is for students to receive the extra support they might need beyond the classroom and, ultimately, feel more confident as a learner.

Tutoring sessions are curated to the needs of each student. Here are some examples of what this class might look like for your learner:

Homework & Study Support:
During the traditional school year, students often come to me needing help with their assignments for English class. This can mean enrolling in the class occasionally on an "as needed" basis or on-going. I work alongside students with their assignments, chunking the directions and guiding them through each step of the assignment, providing assistance, encouragement, and constructive feedback throughout. If a student has an assessment to study for, I work with students to break down the material in a manageable way, giving them strategies to apply after our session.

Test Prep:
I work with students studying for the English, Language Arts, and Reading portion of the PSAT, SAT, ACT, CLT, or their state assessments. I help students gain a better understanding of both the content and the structure of the test and to employ test taking strategies that work for various tests. For writing portions of the test, I can assign practice writing prompts and provide feedback on how to improve the writing according to the test's grading standards.

Writing Coaching:
Writing coaching involves working together through every step of the writing process, from brainstorming and organizing ideas to revising and polishing a final draft. I guide students as they transform their initial thoughts into clear, structured writing, helping them feel confident in expressing their ideas. Along the way, I assist students in improving their word choice to elevate the overall quality of their work. I provide support for all forms of writing, including narrative, expository, argumentative, and academic research writing. I also help students craft essays for high school or college admissions and scholarships.
**Please note that this type of tutoring typically requires a minimum of four (4) sessions for the best results**

Guided Reading Practice:
In guided reading sessions, I work with students to read various types of literature—short stories, poems, non-fiction articles, or novels—aloud together while answering guided questions along the way to check for comprehension. These sessions are especially helpful for students with dyslexia or ADHD who may struggle with oral reading or understanding the text. As we read, we pause to discuss the story in an engaging way that sparks interest and makes the process enjoyable. To reinforce understanding, I may assign a short paragraph response that not only checks comprehension but also provides an opportunity to assess and support writing skills.

Independent Teaching: Curriculum Curated to the Needs of Each Student:
This option is a popular choice for homeschooled students or those seeking consistency in English Language Arts and Reading instruction during the summer months. I begin by meeting with the student and their parents to discuss their needs, goals, and interests. From there, I design a personalized curriculum that is both engaging and relevant, ensuring it aligns with their state or Common Core standards. The curriculum covers all domains of English Language Arts, including reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing (narrative, expository, and argumentative), grammar and conventions, vocabulary development, and speaking and listening skills. This tailored approach allows students to thrive in a way that is meaningful to them.
**Please note that this type of tutoring typically requires a minimum of eight (8) sessions for the best results**
