This semester's self-paced course will provide 15 different art units with projects targeted for 1st or 2nd grade students. Each unit will cover a different artist, art movement, and/ or art culture and will teach students how to manipulate various art media, both 2D and 3D, better preparing students for upper elementary art. Week 1Lesson 1Op Art illustrationsdrawings segmented into strips to create optical illusions like those of the Op Art movement. Needed supplies include white paper, a pencil and eraser, a ruler, and colored markers.Week 2Lesson 2Kandinsky circlesa painting series made to resemble the circle painting of Wassily Kandinsky. Needed supplies include white mixed media or sketch paper, watercolor paint, a paint brush, and a water cup.Week 3Lesson 3Face collagesa paper collage of an animal or human face created after studying and celebrating the art and diversity from the many peoples of Western African from the Sub-Saharan Africa, between the Sahara and the Kalahari Desert. Needed supplies include construction paper, scissors, and glue.Week 4Lesson 4Monster facesclay sculptures made after studying the history of statues. Needed supplies include air-dry clay, a container of water, paint and paint supplies after the project has dried, and a spoon, fork, and knife to use as clay tools.Week 5Lesson 5Paul Klee fishoil pastel drawings made to resemble the painting styles of Paul Klee. Needed supplies include white or black paper and oil pastels or crayons.Week 6Lesson 6Pop Art hand printa four-print series of one's hand on bright paper to resemble the famous celebrity prints by Andy Warhol during the Pop Art movement of the 1950s. Needed supplies include construction paper, scissors, glue, a pencil with an eraser, black paint, and a paintbrush.Week 7Lesson 7Ted Harrison landscapeschalk drawings of landscapes to study contrast. Needed supplies include white or construction paper and oil pastels or crayons.Week 8Lesson 8Paint paper weavingan abstract painted paper cut into strips to make a paper weave. Needed supplies include white mixed media or sketch paper, construction paper, scissors, glue, watercolor paint, a paint brush, and a water cup.Week 9Lesson 9Chinawarepaper China paints illustrated to resemble the Chinaware traded with Europe during the 1800's. Needed supplies include white paper, something to trace a circle as large as the paper, scissors, a pencil and eraser, a blue marker, and a black marker.Week 10Lesson 10Layered hamburgersa mixed media collage to learn about texture and layering in composition. Needed supplies include white paper, crayons or colored pencils, scissors, and glue.Week 11Lesson 11Windmillsa paper windmill using the action painting designs of artists like Jackson Pollock. Needed supplies include white mixed media or sketch paper, scissors, a brass fastener, a black crayon, watercolor paint, a paint brush, and a water cup.Week 12Lesson 12Pointillisma marker drawing made with dots to resemble the pointillism of Georges Seurat. Needed supplies include white paper, a pencil and eraser, and colored markers.Week 13Lesson 13Musician collagea collage illustration done in Cubist style to mimic the painting of the Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso. Needed supplies include white paper, scissors, glue, construction paper, and crayons or colored pencils.Week 14Lesson 14Warm and cool color cityscapesa 2D mixed media design of a warm color cityscape mirrored over a cool color cityscape. Needed supplies include white mixed media or sketch paper, a pencil and eraser, a black crayon, watercolor paint, a paint brush, and a water cup.Week 15Lesson 15Clay calligraphya clay design of one's name made to copy Ancient stone writing both from Southeastern Asian countries like. Needed supplies include air-dry clay, a container of water, paint and paint supplies after the project has dried, and a spoon, fork, and knife to use as clay tools.
- Students will learn about fifteen major artists, art movements, and/ or art cultures. Students will also learn how to manipulate at grade appropriate levels various art media including clay, paint, colored pencils, and oil pastels.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts education, am certified by the state of Indiana to teach art for grades PK-12, and have been in education since 2008. I have taught versions of each of these projects in public, private, and charter school; and this course is designed to meet the standards/ requirements for art in most U.S. states.

Frequency: 7 or more throughout the classDetails: Students will be given individual feedback within two school days for each project after the student has posted a photo of the project to the class page. No grades will be given.
I will provide a step-by-step guide that features pictures and a description of each step in addition to the provided instructional video.
Students need to have taken part one of this course.
1 file available upon enrollment8.5x11" or 9x12” sketch or mixed media paper #2 wooden pencils with erasers Scissors Glue (liquid or glue stick) Watercolor paint (with a brush and water container) Construction/ colored paper (9x12”) various colors 12” ruler Colored markers A black marker Black acrylic or tempera paint 2.5 pounds of air-dry clay (white) Crayons and/or colored pencils Optional supplies include tempera or acrylic paint of various colors, a plastic straw, a brass fastener, and oil pastels, but crayons and watercolor paint can be used as a substitute; and the windmill project that uses the straw and fastener can be made just as a painting. Most supplies excluding the clay can be purchased for under $1 or 2 each at local department stores. The clay which is also found at local department stores and on Amazon can be purchased for under $10 but does need to be white to hold paint well.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Several art movements and artworks from art history will be displayed, and the original purpose of those artworks will be discussed which may include its religious and/ or cultural purposes. No nudity will ever be shown. Please note for the Chinaware project, I do mention that porcelain was once made with ground bone.
