Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to Sentence VarietyIn this class, students will practice: (1) Identifying simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences (2) Creating sentences of varied lengths to demonstrate fluency.Week 2Lesson 2Using Figurative Language to Create Impactful SentencesIn this class, students will practice using figurative language to make sentences more immersive and engaging for the reader.Week 3Lesson 3Introduction to the ParagraphIn this class, students will examine model paragraphs. Students will be introduced to topic sentences, supporting details that directly relate to the topic sentence, and concluding paragraph sentences.Week 4Lesson 4Revising & Editing a ParagraphIn this class, students will review revising and editing. Students will submit final copies of two paragraph assignments.Week 5Lesson 5Introduction to the Essay & OutliningIn these classes, learners will examine a model outline and essay. Students will be introduced to the organizational structure of an essay, as well as review topic sentences, supporting details that directly relate to the topic sentence, and smooth transition words and phrases.Week 6Lesson 6Composing a Five-Paragraph EssayIn this class, learners will be reminded of the requirements to compose a standard essay. Students will have until the course end date to submit the final copy.
This class is taught in English.
Students will be to write an engaging hook. Students will be able to write a three-point thesis. Students will be able to construct a well-developed paragraph. Students will write a topic sentence. Students will use supporting details in a paragraph. Students will use varied sentence structure in their writing. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of reviewing written work for conciseness, clarity, and grammar.
I have over eight years of experience teaching composition and writing to students of all ages.
Homework Offered
Students will submit sentences, paragraphs, and final drafts of their typed essay within one week after class ends. All submissions will receive feedback. Parents Please Note: I will keep homework to a minimum, but students that take this course need opportunities outside of class to apply what they have learned to their writing. I also feel it is important for their work to be reviewed and given feedback, so that they begin taking accountability for their own learning.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Pre-recorded videos will be accessible through unlisted YouTube videos in which only learners with the link will be able to access it. An account is NOT needed for learners to access the videos. GoogleDocs does require the use of a gmail account. Please ensure your learner has an account set up. This platform will be used for submitting writing and receiving feedback on written assignments. Please Note: You can create a Google Account for your child under 13 (or the applicable age in your country), and manage it using Family Link. With Google Accounts, children get access to Google products like Search, Chrome, and Gmail, and you can set up basic digital ground rules to supervise them.
Once students are enrolled, I will upload the workbook for the class. The workbook will include all of the written homework assignments, essay writing prompts, and model paragraphs and essays written by the teacher.
