Week 1Lesson 1The ParagraphStudents will be introduced to the structure of writing a paragraph. We will work on topic sentences, supporting details, and the closing sentence. Students will practice identifying the different parts in a paragraph. Students will select a prompt and submit their paragraph. Assignment #1: Select one prompt and submit paragraph. Students will receive a review on their work.Week 2Lesson 2The EssayStudents will learn how to structure the introduction and conclusion. Introduction: (the hook/attention-getter) and writing a thesis statement. Conclusion: I will teach the 'upside-down' introduction method. Students will learn about the basic outline format. The students will be given three options for their writing prompt. Assignment #2: Students will complete and submit a three paragraph essay.Week 3Lesson 3Introduction to Writing and Definition PaperObjective: Student will learn how to add more detail to their body paragraphs. Student will practice structuring paragraphs (topic sentence, main idea, and thesis statements). Student will select a word or phrase to define.Week 4Lesson 4Compare and Contrast PaperObjective: Student will select two things to compare and contrast using formal writing. Student will include their outline (point-by-point or subject-by-subject).Week 5Lesson 5Persuasive PaperObjective: Student will learn to support claims with logical reasoning. Student will learn the persuasive elements: pathos, ethos, logos.Week 6Lesson 6Analysis PaperObjective: Student will learn to identify the author's purpose (identifying literary devices and theme).

Homework Offered
There will be weekly writing assignments and all submitted work will receive feedback.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
