The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are very simple but important components of the National Core Art Standards. Students will analyze one to two elements of art during each class session, and create a simple work of art or illustration that incorporates or emphasizes that/those element(s). Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to Elements of Art; Element of LineStudents will be introduced to the elements of art. We will analyze the elements of line and practice drawing a variety of lines.Week 2Lesson 2Element of ShapeStudents will be introduced to the elements of Shape (organic and geometric), and the role they play in making art. use light and shadow to draw several forms in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on shape, to be completed by the next class session.Week 3Lesson 3Element of ColorStudents will be introduced to the elements of color (primary, secondary, warm, cool, and complementary), and value (how light or dark a color is). use light and shadow to draw several forms in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on color, to be completed by the next class session.Week 4Lesson 4Element of FormStudents will review the geometric shapes from week 2, then analyze ways in which some of them can be made to look like a three-dimensional form. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on form.Week 5Lesson 5Element of ValueStudents will discern the difference in value as it pertains to lightness or darkness of a color, and monetary value of a work of art. We will practice using various applications of pressure and other techniques with different tools to create value studies in sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on value.Week 6Lesson 6Element of TextureStudents will locate different textures in their environments, describe how they feel, and then draw and label representations of these and other textures in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on texture.Week 7Lesson 7Element of SpaceStudents will discern the difference between positive and negative space, and draw examples in their sketchbooks. Students will choose a drawing, painting or photography assignment based on space, to be completed by the final class session.Week 8Lesson 8Completing All AssignmentsStudents will work on any unfinished assignments and submit.
I am a licensed, veteran art teacher with over 20 years' experience teaching the elements of art. Over the years, I've found and developed fun and interesting art projects and processes to help kids learn and remember what the elements are and why they are important to the artistic process.

1 file available upon enrollmentA handout with the names and definitions of all of the elements of art will be provided during class. Pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener crayons, colored pencils markers (Crayola or Target brand) both regular and fineline if possible. Crayola goes on sale for $1/box, and Target brand might go on sale for .50/box. LOTS of paper! Sketchbook and/or printer paper for practice good quality drawing paper (Canson or Strathmore tablets are great) in 8X10, 9X12, or 11X14. These are often on sale at Michael's) EITHER Bristol Board OR watercolor paper (tablets, similar to drawing paper described above, same size) watercolor paint--Crayola or Prang is best. These sometimes go on sale as well before school starts black Sharpies--fine point (regular size sharpie) and ultra-fine point
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
