Homework
1 hour per week. After we've gone through the book together, it'll be helpful for them to read it at home throughout the week. The more often a child reads, the more their reading comprehension grows.Assessment
As the weeks progress, I will informally assess the learner’s reading comprehension, fluency and vocabulary development. If a care-giver would like, I may also formally assess the learner’s progress.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 5
Beginner Level
**Learners will need to know how to read at at least a late-first grade level—basic phonics and sight words needed.** 📚 In these 1:1 tutoring sessions, I will support readers in their reading journey, using enjoyable books and passages. The level of the texts will depend on the needs of the learner. We'll focus on reading fluency and comprehension and critical thinking skills. The books will be either full storybooks with engaging storylines and illustrations or well-crafted, illustrated nonfiction books or workbooks. I will assess where the learner is at the beginning of the first lesson, using a "beginning reader" assessment or an informal assessment for proficient readers. Next, I will introduce the first book we’ll read together. We will alternate between fiction and nonfiction each week. Depending on the learner, we may look through the pictures first and then read together. I may read the book aloud first while the learner follows along. We may go through the book and find words the learner knows. It depends on what the learner needs. I will help the learner by providing mini-lessons in needed reading or comprehension skills: phonics or sight words, repeated readings for fluency, and specific skills, such as summarizing, identifying the main idea, and more! If necessary, I may also incorporate a bit of writing at the end. All the skills are related and help build one another!
