Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate Level
When we think of creative writing, books or essays usually come to mind. The truth is that we experience different forms of creative writing every day when we watch television, go shopping, listen to music, and more.

In this exciting course, we will go beyond the typical essay and explore the concepts of narrative, informative, and persuasive writing in other exciting creative formats such as:
- Short/micro fiction
- Personal bios, Cover letters
- Infographics
- Poetry/song lyrics
- Advertising copy
- Product descriptions
- Product/Restaurant/Movie reviews
and more.

In addition to exploring styles/genres of writing in unique formats, we will also focus on the following skills:
- Cultivating creative expression and discovering the writer's "voice."
- Sharpening observation skills.
- More detailed and descriptive writing.
- Setting the writing tone.
- Expanding vocabulary and learning to use a thesaurus
- Expanding knowledge and usage of figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, alliteration, and more)
- Use familiar words creatively to make better, wiser word choices.

Learning these methods will give learners a new perspective and maybe even a deeper appreciation for creative writing and enhance the quality of any traditional writing assignments they may have in the future.

Each class will be a combination of collaborative discussion and writing workshops. This approach allows students to grasp the fundamentals from interactive teacher-led activities, and it also allows them to practice writing.

We will explore a different style and concept each week. The tentative schedule is as follows (and is subject to change):
Weeks 1-2: Narrative focus
Weeks 3-4: Informative focus
Weeks 5-6: Persuasive focus
Weeks 7-8: Combo (two styles in one)
Learning Goals
Cultivate creative expression and discover the writer's voice
Sharpen observation skills.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I've been a storyteller all my life but doing it professionally for the past two decades as a published author, ghostwriter, award-winning screenwriter, editor, and creativity coach. I've hosted youth and adult writing workshops over the past ten years. I love teaching writers to stretch their imaginations as well as strengthen/develop writing skills with fun exercises and challenges that utilize all five senses to spark inspiration and creativity. I encourage writers to try new styles and genres and help them learn to be keen observers with a witty vocabulary so they become better writers in the future.
