Week 1Lesson 1Meeting 1: States of Matter & Changes in States of MatterWe will delve into the states of matter and their transformations. We explore the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, as well as the factors influencing changes between these states as we enjoy making ice cream in a bag! Understanding these fundamental concepts lays the groundwork for comprehending physical processes, phase transitions, and the behavior of matter.Week 2Lesson 2Meeting 2: Mixtures & SolutionsWe'll be diving into the world of mixtures and solutions! We'll learn about different types of mixtures and what makes them unique. We'll also explore how solutions are made and what factors can change them. Get ready for some exciting experiments and discoveries about how things mix together!Week 3Lesson 3Q2 Meeting 3: What Affects the Speed of Dissolving? (Sugar Cube Lab)We'll investigate what affects the speed of dissolving substances. We'll conduct a fun Sugar Cube Lab to observe how factors like temperature, stirring, and surface area impact the rate at which sugar dissolves in water. Through hands-on experimentation, we'll uncover the science behind dissolving and learn about important concepts like solubility and saturation. Get ready to become expert scientists in understanding how substances dissolve!Week 4Lesson 4Meeting 4: Atomic Theory & Structure of an AtomLet's explore the fascinating world of atoms!. We'll learn about the building blocks of matter, subatomic particles like protons, neutrons, and electrons, and how they come together to form atoms. Through interactive activities and models, we'll unravel the mysteries of atomic structure and gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental units that make up everything around us. Get ready for an atomic adventure!Week 5Lesson 5Meeting 5: What Is Energy? We'll learn what energy is, how it can be transformed and the different forms it can take, such as kinetic, potential, thermal, and electrical energy. We'll discover the role of energy in our daily lives and its importance in various natural processes. Get ready to uncover the power and wonders of energy!Week 6Lesson 6Meeting 6: What Changes Can Energy Cause? We'll uncover the transformative power of energy. We'll explore how energy can initiate changes such as creating motion, generating heat, causing chemical reactions, and producing light. Through hands-on experiments, we'll witness the diverse effects of energy and its role in shaping our world.Week 7Lesson 7Meeting 7: What is Electricity? (Static Electricity)We'll learn how static electricity is created and its effects. Through engaging activities, we'll unravel the mysteries of charged particles and static discharge. Get ready to spark your curiosity and discover the electrifying nature of static electricity!Week 8Lesson 8Meeting 8: How Do We Use Electricity? We'll explore how electricity is generated, transmitted, and used in everyday life. From lighting up our homes to powering electronic devices, we'll uncover the diverse ways in which we harness electrical energy.
I am a certified teacher and I've been teaching middle school comprehensive science since 2014 and I taught 5th-grade science many years prior to moving to middle school. I currently help design activities that support the 7th & 8th-grade curriculum for all of the science teachers and serve as a math and science instructional coach to K-5 elementary teachers. I will be incorporating reading and writing in this science course as well. I have a master's degree in reading and writing, and I am a firm believer in reading and writing in the content area.
