Assessment
Students' progress will be monitored using the Xtra Math platform with periodic quizzes. You will receive weekly messages about your students' progress via the message feature. You will receive access to additional resources to practice your learner's math facts at home.Class Experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Are you tired of seeing your learner struggle with mental math? Have you considered they are suffering from math anxiety? It's a huge barrier for thousands of students especially students with special needs. They don't have to suffer if we put things in place for them to become successful while having fun. A huge source of math anxiety is not performing math skills quickly. Solving problems quickly and accurately involves math fact fluency. Math fact fluency "frees up brainpower or working memory to do more complex mathematical work," (Sawchuk , 2023). So many students with ADHD/ADD, Autism, Learning Disabilities (e.g. Dyscalculia), and more struggle with learning more complex mathematics because they are not fluent in their math facts in addition and subtraction. __________ Class Description In this intensive ongoing private tutoring class, learners will receive a scaffolded, systematic, and engaging math fact fluency intervention. This intervention is research and evidence-based and will use different instructional strategies to increase the math fact fluency of all learners. Learners will engage in game-based activities and direct instruction within their math fact fluency focus. They will receive instruction with the usage of slides and will have the opportunity to debrief each game/activity they completed by reflecting on their performance. Learners will receive consistent feedback and coaching from their tutor in an inclusive, safe, interactive, and supportive learning environment. Additionally, I will support your learner teaching them how to build his/her/their confidence as a mathematician. Students will learn: -Addition Facts (e.g. adding 10) -Subtraction Facts (e.g. subtracting within 20) The scope and sequence of the lessons will follow Dr. Nicki Newton's math fact fluency sequence of math facts which you can find here: https://mathrunningrecords.com/research. Learners will meet 2 times per week in order to have one day to focus on addition and one day to focus on subtraction fact fluency. Pre-Requisite: Students must be able to identify whole numbers independently. _________ Lesson Sequence Week of 12/11/23 -Day 1: Plus 1 -Day 2: Minus 1 Week of 12/18/23 -Day 1: Plus 0 -Day 2: Minus 0 Week of 12/25/23 -Day 1: Count on 1, 2, 3 -Day 2: Subtracting a Number from Itself Week of 1/1/24 -Day 1: Add within 5 -Day 2: Count Back 1, 2, 3 Week of 1/8/24 -Day 1: Make 5 -Day 2: Subtract within 5 Week of 1/15/24 -Day 1: Add within 10 -Day 2: Subtract from 5 Week of 1/22/24 -Day 1: Make 10 -Day 2: Subtract within 10 Week of 1/29/24 -Day 1: Add 10 -Day 2: Subtract from 10 Week of 2/5/24 -Day 1: Adding by 9 -Day 2: Subtracting by 9 Week of 2/12/24 -Day 1: Adding by 7 -Day 2: Subtracting by 7 Week of 2/19/24 -Day 1: Doubles -Day 2: Subtracting 10 from a Teen Number Week of 2/26/24 -Day 1: Doubles Plus 1 -Day 2: Subtract Ones from Teen Numbers Week of 3/4/24 -Day 1: Doubles Plus 2 -Day 2: Subtracting Differences of 1 and 2 Week of 3/11/24 -Day 1: Adding 7, 8, 9 -Day 2: Subtract by Bridging 10 Week of 3/18/24 -Day 1: Adding within 20 -Day 2: Fact Families Week of 3/25/24 -Day 1: Make 20 -Day 2: Subtract from 20 _______ Class Structure 3 minutes | Greetings & Connection Activity 5 minutes | Mini-Lesson 2-3 minutes | Introduction of Math Fact Fluency Game/Activity 10-12 minutes | Practice Math Facts in Game/Activity 2 minutes | Debrief the Game/Activity 2-3 minutes | Xtra Math Practice 2 minutes | Closing & Homework Explanation ______ Assessment Students will periodically be assessed using the platform Xtra Math to track their math fact fluency each week as a part of their classwork and homework. Student reports will be shared with parents/caregivers on a weekly basis via the message feature.
