Maps aren't the only way to find a treasure! In this 4 day camp, we will explore treasure maps, scavenger hunts, and clues as fun ways to put our imagination, creative thinking, and emerging literacy skills into action. Day 1: Treasure Maps – imaginary worlds We will look at two examples of treasure maps, noticing how they include pictures, symbols, and words, and get inspiration for our own map-making. Then we will use our imagination to make our own treasure maps of imaginary lands. Day 2: Treasure Maps – in your own home We will continue to explore treasure maps, but this time think about mapping out a place in our own home. We will talk about including pictures or words that will help someone follow a path that leads them to a treasure. We will get started on our maps and brainstorm ideas of what we can hide as the treasure. Day 3: Scavenger Hunts Sometimes there are treasures all around you, you just need to be a keen observer. In this class, we will go on a quick scavenger hunt right in the room where you are, and then we will draw and/or write to design our own scavenger hunts. Will your family be able to find everything on your scavenger hunt list? Day 4: Treasure Hunting with Clues We will start out the class by using clues to go on a virtual treasure hunt together, then we will explore using drawing/writing to create clues for a treasure hunting game at home. This class is designed for children with a range of literacy skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing letters, words, and/or sentences). If your child is slightly outside of the age range, but you believe they would benefit from this class, feel free to reach out to me to see if it is a match. I strive to provide an inclusive learning environment and celebrate all levels of literacy development.
学習到達目標
The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in playful and meaningful ways both in class and afterwards at home. I believe that learning to read and write is a process that develops gradually with support, time and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing letters and/or words, recognizing symbols, letters and/or words). The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development and to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways.
