This World Literature course is designed to meet the requirements for one semester of a year-long 10th-grade English course. Throughout the 14 weeks, students will be guided through a variety of texts (short stories, poems, essays, novels, nonfiction, etc.) from a variety of global perspectives. Live sessions take place once per week. New material will be provided during each class. Students will also learn grade-level appropriate vocabulary, grammar, writing skills. Homework will consist of a weekly journal entry (Google Doc) that includes elements of research, analysis, and synthesis (generating new ideas based upon what they just learned). Two original video essays (mid-term and final) will also be required during the course. Sample units include: Unit 1-African Literature Unit 2-Chicano/Hispanic/Latinx Literature Unit 3- Subaltern Literature (Women, LGTBQ, & Caribbean) Week 1--Overview of African Literature & Mythology + African Trickster Tales Week 2--Contemporary African in American Literature: Americanah (Students will need to purchase their own copies of the novel.) Week 3--Americanah (cont'd) Week 4--Intro Caribbean Literature + Kinkaid and Danticat Week 5--Overview of Mayan & Aztec Mythology + Hispanic/Latinx Literature Week 6--Chicano Literature "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" Week 7--Contemporary Latinx American YA Literature: The Poet X (Students must purchase their own copies of the text.) Week 8--The Poet X (Video Essay #1 due) Week 9--Overview of Asian Children’s Stories (China, Japan, and Korea) Week 10--Contemporary Asian American YA Literature: Parachutes (Students must purchase their own copies of the novel.) Week 11--Parachutes (cont'd) Week 12--Collection of Multicultural Short Stories: Student Choice Week 13--Video Essay Workshop/Writing Lab (Video Essay #2 due by Tuesday, April 25, 2023) Week 14--Final course reflections and video essay viewing party
