CS Lewis and his Chronicles of Narnia have delighted both children and adults for more than 70 years. Join me for this ongoing study as we experience the incredible adventures of Aslan's Narnia.

This class combines all of my individual Narnia book studies into one ongoing class to make it easier for parents to schedule their learner's literature studies. It provides scheduling stability, with classes meeting at the same day/time throughout the school year, but also allows for students to jump in and out as needed - for example, if a student has already studied one or more of the books, but wants to finish the series by studying the others.

We also work our way through the series at a fairly slow pace (one book/month) to help students more easily balance their time between this course and any other Language Arts studies they are doing for the school year.

Students will read one book from the Chronicles of Narnia each month, meeting together THREE times to discuss various literary elements such as characters, conflict, setting, and themes.
NOTE: We will have at least one week BREAK between each study, occasionally two weeks around holidays/breaks. Please check the schedule carefully for the class times.

Students are encouraged to read through each book at their own pace before the scheduled discussions Each of the three discussion meetings per book will be casual, book-club style meetings, and will cover the plots and a variety of literary elements.

Class time will include teacher-led instruction and annotation, student-led observations about literary elements and the events of story, and an examination of Lewis' masterful use of figurative language and suspense. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and ask questions freely. Learners will occasionally be offered optional creative activities or worksheets that help reinforce their observations.

OCT 2024: THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE
"But the moment they were inside they heard the voices in the passage - and then someone fumbling at the door - and then they saw the handle turning. 'Quick!' said Peter, 'there's nowhere else,' and flung open the wardrobe. All four of them bundled inside it and sat there, panting, in the dark." CS Lewis, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"

We will follow the adventures of siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy as they journey through the wardrobe into the land of Narnia and begin a race to save Narnia from the power of the White Witch. Through their adventures, we will examine the themes of family, friendship, forgiveness, sacrifice, and courage.

“Aslan" said Lucy "you're bigger."
"That is because you're older, little one" answered he.

"I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger". ~ CS Lewis, Prince Caspian

They are called to help King Caspian on his quest as he sails to the end of the world to find the seven lost lords of Narnia. There will be no external sites accessed by students in this class. All visual presentations, such as powerpoint slides, will be provided by the teacher via standard screen-share. The overarching theme of the Narnia stories is the triumph of good over evil and the importance of friendship and sacrifice. There is hopefulness throughout, but dark elements do exist. The various stories may contains elements of deception and misuse of power. There are occasional descriptions of battle scenes, death, and menacing creatures. Parents are encouraged to verify that the books are suitable for their learners. I welcome any messages with questions or concerns. NOTE: In accordance with Outschool policy, we will not be specifically examining any biblical allusions or allegories found in the work, outside of a general acknowledgement that Lewis' personal faith often informed his writing. This will be noted as a point of literary interest rather than an examination of the theology behind the allusions.
