Do you love having conversations with friends about ideas and topics that are not only interesting, but really give you something to think about? If so, welcome to "What If?" Social Club- the place to come for some mind blowing questions and "thinking outside the box" discussion! Each week, the group will begin by making introductions and sharing things that they are interested in to build rapport and get to know each other a little better. I will use the interests of the students to create "What if " themes/questions for future meetings. After this, I will spend 10-15 minutes building background knowledge on the topic of our discussion theme for the day. These themes will be focused on music, history, science, books, animals, etc... I will share a presentation that includes a quick synopsis, important facts, pictures, etc... I will ask a "what if" question based on the information I shared. This question is designed to get the students thinking and talking! Each week, we will have one main question to discuss. One example might be: "What if the internet stopped working and disappeared forever?" Students might discuss how they would handle that change, how it would impact their current ways of communicating with friends, or the effects on education during our current pandemic situation. If there is extra time after we finish discussing our main question, then I will ask other "what if" questions that relate to our original theme or allow student generated "what if" questions stemming from our original question. Trying to establish how a different cause leads to new and different effects will really get learners thinking critically and help them practice providing evidence for claims and opinions! Your child will have so much fun with this class, they won't even realize they are socializing and practicing important reading skills at the same time! This class will meet each Tuesday at 2:00 PM (EST). The week of dates and themes for "What if" discussions are as follows: Week of Feb. 9th- Space: Planets and the Sun Week of Feb. 16th- Space: the Moon Week of Feb. 23rd- Space: Stars Week of March 2nd- Disney movies: Origin/History and favorite movies Week of March 9th- Disney Music: songs Week of March 16th- Food: Where did fast food come from Week of March 23rd- American Girl Doll History Week of March 30th- Animals and their habitats (*Last class of this round*) Come join us for a mind blowing good time!
