In this ongoing class, students will learn writing skills and will work on improving their writing. This class meets three days a week. Each week, the class will be given a weekly writing goal. I will give minilessons and students will do activities that focus on the weekly goal. Students will also be given a new writing topic each week. Each week, students will ... - brainstorm - write a draft - revise - edit - write a final draft - create a writing booklet (Optional Independent Activity) Each week's goal and writing assignment will be different so you are welcome to join for any week. Below is a breakdown of the classes each week: ****** DAY 1: BRAINSTORMING AND WRITING ****** Students will be introduced to the weekly goal. This goal will be based on the different traits of writing: sentence fluency, organization, word choice, voice, or conventions. Students will also be given the writing topic for the week. In this class, students will brainstorm ideas and write a paragraph. The first class of the week will follow this structure: - Introduction to weekly writing goal - Minilesson on weekly writing goal - Introduction to weekly writing topic - Teacher will model how to brainstorm with a graphic organizer - Students will brainstorm with a graphic organizer - Teacher will model how to use the graphic organizer to write a draft - Students will use their graphic organizer to write a draft I will check-in with each student to make sure they have some ideas to write on and to assist with brainstorming some ideas for their writing. ****** DAY 2: REVISING AND EDITING ****** Students will review the weekly goal. Students will revise and edit their writing in this class. I will model how to revise my writing and show students how to incorporate the weekly goal into my writing. Next, students will revise their own writing. I will assist students as needed. Then, I will show students how to edit their writing. I use a method called COPS: Capitals, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling. Students will edit their writing using each part of the method to guide their editing. Revising and editing will follow these structures: Revising: - Revise based on weekly writing goal - Revise by adding descriptive words or details Editing: - Capitalization - Organization - Punctuation - Spelling As they are editing, I will check-in with each student. I will give some tips and ideas on how students can improve their writing. When students finish revising and editing, we will practice the weekly goal. ****** DAY 3: FINAL DRAFT ****** Students will review the weekly goal. Students will write their final draft in this class. The third class of the week will follow this structure: - Practice the weekly goal - Teacher will model how to write the final draft - Students will write a final draft by using their revisions and edits from the previous class - Students will share their final draft with the group Students will be encouraged to write in their best handwriting. As students finish writing their final drafts, we will do an activity that practices the weekly goal. ****** OPTIONAL: Independent Assignment ****** I will provide a video modeling how to turn our writing into a booklet. This is an optional assignment. Students may complete this assignment independently. They can share their booklets in our classroom.
