Calling all Pokémon professors! In this 10-week course, learners will will take on the role of a Pokémon professor who specializes in the relationships between Pokémon and humans. Their friend’s podcast needs help educating listeners on jobs involving Pokémon, other than becoming a trainer. Learners will choose one of three Pokémon-related jobs to research, setting the stage for their writing adventure!

Throughout the course, learners will learn the essential skills needed to write an informative essay that engages and educates their audience. With an emphasis on group discussions, learners will hone their skills in crafting strong thesis statements, organizing supporting paragraphs, and creating captivating introductions and conclusions. They'll also learn how to incorporate descriptive language and similes to make their essays more engaging for their audience.

This course provides all the necessary tools to keep learners organized, including a master worksheet and course-provided articles. By blending the imaginative world of Pokémon with real-world writing skills, this course is perfect for learners who want to explore Pokémon in a unique way and improve their writing abilities!

Here is the course schedule:

Lesson 1 - Learners will become familiar with the project and pick one of three Pokémon-related jobs to research.

Lesson 2 - Learners will learn about writing a thesis statement, and research by reading their first article.

Lesson 3 - Learners will continue using the course-provided articles for research. They will learn how to find details in order to outline and write their supporting paragraphs.

Lesson 4 - Learners will learn how to outline and write an introduction paragraph, including how to hook their audience.

Lesson 5 - Learners will learn how to outline and write a conclusion paragraph.

Lesson 6 - Learners will learn how to add character to their informative essay by incorporating descriptive language and similes. The podcast audience wants not only to learn but also to be engaged. Learners will also finish their rough draft and submit a PDF version in Google Classroom.

Lesson 7 - Learners will learn how to avoid run-ons and revise their rough drafts based on teacher feedback.

Lesson 8 - Learners will learn when citations are needed, how to write in-text citations, and how to write a works cited page. Learners will also finish their peer review draft and submit a PDF version in Google Classroom.

Lesson 9 - Learners will learn how to give feedback, and then they will review a peer's draft. This will be done through Padlet. Learners will be given a link to a unique Padlet where they and their peer review partner can anonymously review each others’ work without seeing the work of non-partnered classmates.

I've taught in public schools and for a virtual private school. The course is adapted from a unit I did with my virtual students. Not only have I put a Pokémon spin on the unit, but I made slight changes to better aid students' progress. I’ve been a Pokémon fan since my childhood. I enjoy finding ways to incorporate Pokémon to help students access the content, and I believe students enjoy it too!
