When kids have dysgraphia and other learning challenges it can be difficult to get started on a writing project. Reluctant writers need extra support such as graphic organizers to help them brainstorm and execute their ideas. Reluctant writers also do better when they have the opportunity to choose what to write about. Purposeful writing can also motivate reluctant writers. They need to see writing as a way to share meaningful information rather than just an academic exercise. This course...
Students will engage the writing process using supports like graphic organizers to write about a subject that they are passionate about. They will be motivated to do purposeful writing by producing a graphic novel and comic book page for a story that they have developed.
Bridget Smith is a credentialed K-12 teacher, a published writer, and the mom to reluctant writers. She has extensive experience supporting kids with ADHD and other learning differences here on the Outschool platform.
Graphic novel templates, and graphic organizers for story planning will be uploaded to the Outschool Classroom before class begins. Please download and print them out if possible. They are valuable supports for Reluctant Writers. A pen or pencil, colored pens or pencil, and blank paper would also be helpful.
We will read about three pages from "Dogman" by Dave Pilkey, "The Last Kids on Earth" or "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down" or to inspire our learners to develop their own graphic novel. We will compare "The Amazing Spiderman" and "Calvin and Hobbes" to learn more about comic books.
