This course is designed to help students learn to use AI as a tool and not to copy/paste what an AI program writes and claim it as their own original writing. As parents, we have to accept the fact that our kids are using AI in their everyday lives just like we are, and they are now trying to use AI to help them in school. As a writing tutor who has private tutoring sessions with as many as 50 students on any given week, I have sadly been witnessing an increase in students using AI to write their essays for them. Not only is the use of AI to write an essay often very obvious, it is creating many problems for teachers. There are now dozens of AI detectors available to help busy teachers scan essays the same way they check for plagiarism. This is leading to many students getting very bad grades, and in college being caught using AI to write your essay is as bad as being caught plagiarising or cheating. A zero or 'F' can have devastating effects on a student's academic career. In this course I will be providing five lessons to help students learn how to write original five paragraph essays using AI to help them, not write for them. Students will have up to five weeks to complete the course, but they may do all the lessons in the same week, or even the same day, depending on how quickly they would like to progress. The course lessons are as follows: 1) Brainstorming 2) Thesis Statement & Outline 3) Body Paragraphs 4) Introduction & Conclusion 5) Final Draft In each lesson I will be demonstrating using five popular essay topic examples so students can learn how to work on a variety of different types of essays. I will be using ChatGPT to show students how AI can help them with different parts of their essay. While I have ChatGPT listed as a resource for this course, your student is not expected to use it in order to benefit from each lesson. AI writing assistants are available in many other programs, including Google Docs (Help me write) and Word (Copilot). Your student may use any AI program that you approve of (or that their teacher allows them to use in school) and all instructions in this course will be applicable. This course may be completed without doing any homework, however I encourage students to fill out the accompanying workbook as they follow along with each video. This way they will be able to practice, and then when they have a school writing essay assignment they can print out the workbook again to have as a guide to help them through the writing process. Alternatively, if your student has a writing assignment for school they would like to work on while going through this course, that will also work very well! And finally, if your student has any questions during this course, or would like feedback on their finished essay, students may message me anytime in the Outschool classroom or messaging system. Of course, I will explain all of this in more detail during the first video lesson. I am looking forward to teaching your student how to write essays using AI the right way!

5 週間以上レッスン 1:
Brainstorming
In this lesson, students are shown how to use AI to help them plan their writing assignment. I show them the correct way to ask AI for information, and then provide them with a workbook to guide them on how to organize their notes.
レッスン 2:
Thesis Statement & Outline
In this second lesson, students are shown how to use their brainstorming notes to create an original thesis statement and plan their body paragraph topics. I provide students with a standard five paragraph outline to fill in. I also show them how to use their thesis statement to create well-written topic sentences and concluding sentences, so that once they begin writing their paragraphs they can stay on topic and in alignment with their claim.

レッスン 3:
Body Paragraphs
In this third lesson, I will resume using AI to help students write their body paragraphs. Again, instruction will focus on how to ask AI to help them find information, rather than having them write their paragraphs for them. I will demonstrate how to search for supporting evidence and ideas for examples, and remind them to use transition words and to always connect their evidence back to their topic. Guidance will also be provide on how to avoid plagiarism and to correctly cite their sources.

レッスン 4:
Introduction & Conclusion
In this fourth lesson, I will show students how to use AI to help them find information to use in their Introduction. I will then show them how to use their own words in their finished Introduction and Body Paragraphs to summarize their essay in the Conclusion and bring the whole essay to a meaningful and effective close.

Hi! My name is Ana and I’m excited to be offering classes on Outschool!I am proud to say that my daughter graduated high school at age sixteen in 2021, and my son did the same in 2024. They are both enrolled in college classes and doing very well and earning A's. I believe their success is in part due to their ability to take what they are being taught in classes and understand why it's important to learn it. I feel strongly that when children understand the 'why' behind what they are asked to learn or do, they engage more deeply. Writing is a critical skill that every child needs to learn so that they are successful in school and in life; writing is the primary way we communicate our understanding of material to our teachers. When a student understands this, and then learns some basic, foundational writing skills, they can more effectively communicate their understanding of a subject. This leads to better grades and greater self-confidence.
I earned my BA in Anthropology from UC Davis and then went on to the University of Montana to earn my Master's Degree. Throughout my college career I worked for my different department chairs as either a tutor or a Teaching Assistant, and as such assisted my peers in material comprehension and essay writing. After graduation I briefly taught Anthropology at my local community college, and later earned my TOEFL Certification so I could specifically teach English as a foreign language.
I have spent the majority of the last twenty years, however, working as a tutor for students of all ages. Prior to the COVID pandemic I had my own after-school tutoring center where a team of instructors and I helped children in Kindergarten through High School catch up in Reading, Writing and Math. Currently, I tutor students of all ages online in Reading and Writing, and am a professional Essay Reviewer.
My focus with teaching classes on Outschool is to ultimately prepare children for success as adults by empowering them with writing tools and skills, and to nurture their own ability to put their ideas and stories down on paper. In my Outschool tutoring sessions, individualized instruction helps a student work on areas where they are struggling, while at the same time nurtures a positive attitude about their abilities as a writer. In my longer courses, writing assignments give students a platform to make a list of goals, take notes and organize their thoughts and ideas, and deepens their ability to communicate their points effectively in paragraphs and longer essays.
In my free time I like to travel to new places with my kids and visit historical sites. We also love to go to Universal Studios and Disney - both in California and in Florida! I also grew up riding horses and competing in show jumping and eventing, and now I have a pony that I'm teaching to pull a cart!
I look forward to seeing your child in my class!
