In this class, learners will meet with me over the course of six months to write a book. Aimed at middle schoolers, we will strive for a typical middle grade-length work, which can range anywhere from around 100 pages to 200, depending on your learner's speed and the needs of their story. We will cover all the essential elements of writing a book, exploring topics like character, description, setting, voice, plot, pacing, and virtually everything else that goes into creating a really dynamic work of fiction. I tend to follow the Ms. Frizzle School of Educator Vibes, so my teaching style is super dynamic and highly interactive! Students should come ready to learn and to share their own work and respond to the work of others. I highly encourage asking questions, trying again and again, (even if that means falling on our faces sometimes!) and being excited about learning. I love to create environments in all my classrooms that are encouraging and funny while also being thorough and advanced and nuanced with content. Students will interact with me during class discussions, lecture, workshops, and with material feedback I will provide to every learner in the class outside of the meeting time. I provide feedback outside of class on ALL workshop assignments and, beyond that, will review in detail up to 10 double spaced pages of prose for your student to keep.

The Foundation
This week will cover all the major elements of a novel, things like genre, length, theme, plot focus, mood, all the way down to the nitty gritty! Finally, we will discuss each student's goals, story focus/ideas, strategies for getting started, and what the students want to learn most in order to start the journey.

Character Study: Protagonists
We'll start with a study of character--what makes a good one, a bad one, and everything in between. We will work on crafting a compelling main character with great strengths, flaws, and most importantly: goals. People don't necessarily need to like your protagonist, but they DO need to want to follow them for a few hundred pages! In this lesson, we will figure out how to make that happen.

Character Study: Side Characters
Here, we will go into...well...everyone else. We'll talk about what makes a great supporting cast--a solid antagonist, best friend, henchman, everything we need to craft good, meaningful side characters that leap off the page.
