In this class, we will learn about wildlife and zoology the creative way...by making art! No art skills required. Each week, a new coloring page created by me will be uploaded to the classroom, focusing on a specific animal or group of animals. The class photo is made from two example completed coloring pages. You may choose to print the page (black and white) or use an iPad or tablet to color the document directly. While we color and label our pages, I will lead a discussion and teach mini-lectures about the animals and related ecological and zoological topics. These may include conservation issues, evolution, adaptations, etc. Expect a relaxed classroom environment in which students learn not only "fun facts" but also foundational concepts of zoology. Every three weeks, the students choose the animals with guidance from Ms. Allie! At the end of class, students will be given the opportunity to show off their pages or may choose to upload them to the classroom for feedback. Upcoming topics (subject to change) include... Week of February 7: Toucans, macaws, and conservation Week of February 14: Poison dart frogs and Batrachotoxins Week of February 21: Terrestrial and aquatic snails Week of February 28: Ratites (ostriches, kiwi birds, cassowaries, and emus) Week of March 7: Birds of paradise and courtship dances Week of March 14: Student Request! Week of March 21: Axolotls and regeneration Week of March 28: Seals and sea lions and taxonomy Week of April 4: Whale sharks and migration Week of April 11: Student Request! Week of April 18: Electric eels and moray eels Week of April 25: Chameleons and geckos Week of May 2: Hammerhead sharks and guitarfish Week of May 9: Old World vs. New World Monkeys Week of May 15: Student Request! I have my BS in Biology (focus on wildlife ecology) and a Master's degree in Science Education. Before teaching, I worked directly with animals in sanctuaries, aquariums, and science museums. I have cared for and educated the public on a variety of animals from monkeys to exotic butterflies to anemones to poisonous frogs to baby seahorses.
