このクラスで学べること

Combining wilderness survival and science, students will develop their wilderness safety skills by developing their camping skills and learning more about each week's topic. Beginners are highly welcomed and encouraged! Want to learn more about Leave No Trace Ethics, plants, and wildlife identifications, how to stay warm at night, or how to prepare for a backpacking trip? Develop your outdoors skills as we spend time walking through examples each week and asking questions you may have to stay comfortable and safe.

The format will be discussion-based and step-by-step instructions. The teacher will ask students questions throughout the lecture to receive feedback on the understanding of content and ensure all voices are being included and heard. The discussion will be based on the information learned during the lecture.

In the materials section below, you can find everything that you will need for this class. The students will be honing and developing their skills by replicating example pictures they bring or use the ones provided each week. The class will be more enjoyable if students pick the example of their choosing!

Last week of December: How to Choose a Campsite & Practice Leave No Trace
First Week of January: Different Types of Tents, How to Set-Up a Tent, and Stay Warm at Night
Second Week of January: All About Gear and Clothing!

Hello! My name is Anna and I'm excited to meet your student(s)! I am a fisheries biologist and environmental educator with a B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences. I am currently an Outdoor School Science Program Instructor in Portland, OR. I have experience teaching environmental education in an in-class, at home, or outdoor setting. I have a background in working with students in leadership development and acting as a mentor for students interested in science. I take an interdisciplinary approach to teaching by including different cultural lenses to the topic as well as, other subjects (art, English, math, etc.). My classroom is a safe space for students of all backgrounds and abilities! My classes will be catered towards stream ecology, wildlife biology, fish biology, botany, entomology, environmental history, marine biology, and all things living! I believe anyone could be a scientist as long as you're curious and constantly asking questions. I'm open to feedback and learning more about how to best work with your student. Let's make learning about science fun and easy to understand!
