Pinyin is the basis of learning Chinese well. If a person can master Pinyin very well, he/she will learn Chinese very easily and very quickly in the future.

This class content has been designed to allow students to have more speaking practice and an immersion experience. In this class, students will learn authentic Mandarin Chinese pronunciation and intonation as they practice internalizing the language. (The writing of Chinese characters will not be covered.)

During the 12 lessons, students will learn how to say these sounds individually and assembly:

•	Six single finals (单韵母)【Vowels】: a, o, e, i, u, ü

•	Compound finals (复韵母): ai, ei, ao, ou, iu, ui, ie, üe, er

•	Nasal finals (鼻韵母): an, en, in,un, ün, ang, eng, ing, ong

•	Initials (声母):b, p, m, f, d, t, n, l, g, k, h, j, q, x, zh, ch, sh, r, z, c, s, y, w

•	Special sounds: zhi, chi, chi, ri, zi, ci, si, yi, wu, yu, ye, yue, yin, yun, yuan, ying

•	Tones:“—”、“/”、“∨”、“\”

In addition, students will independently read 3 stories. Overall, students will learn 410 sounds which are all the sounds made in Chinese.

Beginning learners can sometimes feel a little bit overwhelmed at first. So, my classes include lots of lovely images, joyful songs, and fun games. Kids love that. Images, songs, and games play significant roles in language learning. Students will be immersed in Mandarin and will learn Pinyin through conversational practice, reading stories, and interacting and playing games with each other. Students will be expected to memorize simple sounds, dialogues, and vocabulary words at home, which we will practice and internalize in class as well. Kids learn from singing, seeing, speaking, listening, and doing.
They will have lots of fun!!! 😊

Some common questions:

1. What is Pinyin/ 汉语拼音 (Hànyǔ pīnyīn / Chinese Pinyin)?

Chinese is not a phonetic language. The pronunciation is not related to the writing of Chinese words (characters). Pinyin is the special system created for people to learn Mandarin pronunciation. Pinyin transcribes the Chinese characters so people can pronounce them. It also may be used as an input method to enter Chinese characters into computers or electronics. In other words, 拼音 (Pinyin), which literally translates to “spell sound”, is a phonetic system based on the Latin/English alphabet.

2. Why does your child should/need to learn Pinyin if he/she is learning Chinese?

One Chinese sound is associated with one syllable (“—”、“/”、“∨”、“\”.) and each Chinese character has its own pinyin syllable. Tone symbols are “—”、“/”、“∨”、“\”.They have different means when they use different tone symbols. For example, when the word ma is used with four different tones, each tone gives the word a dramatically different meaning.
With the first tone, mā 妈 means mother;
With the second tone, má 麻 means fiber, hemp, etc.
With the third tone, mǎ 马 means horse;
With the fourth tone, mà 骂 means scold/reprove.

3. How can learning Pinyin help your child improve their Chinese?

Many American Mandarin immersion programs often begin with teaching Chinese characters, not Pinyin. As a result, students are unable to read a simple story, even after learning Chinese for 3 years or more. This is also just the opposite of how children learn Chinese in China.

使用する教材
Students will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools. However, I do suggest using this website https://chinese.littlefox.com/en for your child to practice reading stories. Children really love this website. When the videos tell stories, they show both Chinese characters (written words) and Pinyin (tones). https://chinese.yabla.com/chinese-pinyin-chart.php This one is great to practice Pinyin. When you click this link, you will see a Mandarin Chinese Pinyin Chart. You click on a word and it will read for you. Very useful for learning Pinyin. These two resources are excellent! Don’t forget to check them out for your child!
